Chris, you'll get replies all over the place on this. It all boils down to "what you want to hear and your amplification system will also make a difference. I have a BL710's in one of my LeGrandes and it sounds great. I personally like pickups around 19 ohms to highlight the lows. But you may try them and not like them at all. It gets a little expensive but sometimes you just have to try different pickups and finally find something you like and stick with.

I never heard of Emmons or truetone single coil pickups overdriving an amp. Thats sounds more like the gain on the Hilton pedal needing cut back a bit..

17.5 is kinda middle of the road and a pretty common pickup. Anything around 16.5 and lower will get brighter..

You may also adjust the pickup farther away from the strings too..

Try what Hook said and also try removing the matchbox from your set up. You shouldn't need it anyway with the Hilton pedal. Either the original pickup or the Trutone should sound great with that steel. Those Legrandes sound good with just about any pickup in them.

I've adjusted the height and moving away from the strings. More anything, which is odd, I changed out the strings to jagwires and it sounds MUCH cleaner (the other strings were only a few days old). It was so close to being there and it looks like the combination is helping out alot. I just needed a tad more twang.
