I'm so sad to hear this. Herby was one of the nicest guys I've known on top of being a great player. It was always an honor to play bass for him at PSGA and TSGA, and his determination to come back from the stroke was an inspiration to us all, no matter what instrument we play. My deepest sympathy to Bunny and his family.

When I bought my very first pedal steel guitar back in late 60's from a friend, he included an Emmons Instruction Course by Herby Wallace. I learned most of the songs on it before giving up steel guitar for 25 years.

When I took up steel again in the late 90's I purchased Herby's new course material. I told him that my first exposure to him was from that early Emmons course. He contacted Ron Lashley to see if he could get me a new copy, which he did. I was elated!

Most of what I know today about playing steel was a result of his instructions. Herby and I became good friends, first on the phone, and then in person when we started attending the conventions in St. Louis and Dallas. He will always have a special place in my heart and I will miss our conversations at conventions. RIP

My prayers are with his family at this sad time.

Sincere condolences to Bunny and the family from Sandra and I.
Herby and I have been friends for many years and always enjoyed each others company. I can not begin to to think of how much I shall miss our long phone conversations and our visits at shows. He was such a great person to talk with about all the old times and the music we so much enjoyed.
Rest in Peace my dearly departed friend.

I never met Herby; only spoke with him once on the phone. But I sure learned a lot from his various courses, and greatly admired his playing. He contributed immensely to spreading the love of steel guitar. He will be missed.

:whoa: I just discovered this post, what a shock. The list of legendary players gets shorter each passing day. God bless his spirit and comfort his family.

I've never met anyone like Herby, and I suspect I never will again. We had several long conversations in recent years, on the phone and at steel shows. I took this picture in St. Louis last year.

My heart has just sunk to my stomach. I am very saddened to hear of this. I remember the first time I went to the convention and when he played, I was an instant fan. He is no doubt the reason I play a Mullen. His tone, speed and smooth style of playing knocked me out. What a super guy and an inspiration. Herby will be well missed.

I couldn't believe it when I saw this on facebook... another great steel player and wonderful friend gone to be with the Angel band in Heaven.

Its heartbreaking every time we lose another fellow steel player and a friend... you just never really know what is going to happen.
Herby played in October at Chubby Howard's steel show and I talked with him there.

One of steel guitar's finest...

Herby, you will be greatly missed.
my condolences to the family...

Rest in peace...

This is such sad news. I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Herby several times. Not only was he one of the most exciting steel players to listen to, but he was also so generous with his time and attention, always ready to talk steel. He will be missed. Condolences and prayers for the family.

I've just now signed on to the forum and read about Herby's passing, and I'm just numb. Everyone who knew Herby all say what a true "Gentleman" he was and a "Great Player" and a fellow who was willing to talk to you about steel guitar anytime. And from my own experience I can say without reservation "AMEN" because he was in fact a true "Gentleman" and a "Great Player". He will be very much missed by those lives he touched by his playing, and friendship. My prayers go out to Bunny and family for comfort during this difficult time as others have posted before my post. RIP Herby.

I just logged in and saw this. I am saddened to learn of his passing. Saw him first many years ago at the old DJ convention in Nashville. Had the honor of sitting beside him at one of Bowie Martin's jams in Wilson and watching him do his magic. My condolences to his family.

Oh My God! I can't believe what I'm reading! I've known Herby for many years and know the frustrations he went through after his stroke. I was so happy, that, he was starting to get better and play better. He will be missed by all of us. Herby was a staple at the PSGA shows, every year. We looked so forward to having him play and telling his stories. All I can say is, what a shame, what a shame. Darlene and my condolences go out to his wife and family.
Rest in peace, my friend.
