What kind of pickups do you use on the reso guitar. what is a good brand to look for?
Do you have to take the guitar apart or does it clip on?

| Hi Scott! I like a small battery equipped mike from Radio Shack, because it doesn't change the tone of my dobro. It is about the size of my little fingernail and a 12 foot (guess) cord. I place the mike into the resonator loosely and one wrap of the cord around the tailpin. It will fall out if kicked or tripped accidently. It cost $35.00 plus tax. Battery seems to last a long time. |

I'd recommend the McIntyre piezo pickup. It attached to a spider leg with some special putty like substance.
It sounds very acoustic. About $80 for the kit.
If magnetic is your thing Barcus Berry has a humbucking system for reso. This attaches to the top of the guitar and retails for about $45.
Neither system will effect acoustic properties.

Sounds like a dobro. Actually I was pretty astonished at how dobro it sounds. I can plug it directly into my amp but prefer to tweak it with a Fishman Blender.
The downside (or so I am told) is that it going to be prone to feedback at high levels and I may have to use a Sabine eliminator in some situations. Hasn't been a problem yet.
I'm almost certain that Carl McIntyre is lurking on the forum somewhere.

If you REALLY need a pickup, McIntyre...otherwise, I use a mike.

Have any of you dobro players considered using a Marrs Cat Can instead of an actual dobro? The Cat Can sounds anmazingly like a real dobro, especially if you play it through a match bro. and it doesn't feed back at hiogh volume.
As far as I can tell, the only drawback is that it doesn't look like a real dobro. |
