Where can I get Curly Chalker CD's, especially "More Ways To Play". I have an album of MWTP which I loaned a friend, when I bought it back in the seventies, from the ET Record Shop in Nashville. The nut left it in his car, which was warped when I got it back. I was greatly maddened by my friends stupidity. Please help me find a copy. Thanks BL

If Scotty is selling More Ways to Play, you should buy it from him, seeing as how he financed the recording.
Ditto for Tom Bradshaw and the Nevada Breaks album.

These men invested their savings in these recordings, and they deserve to receive the proceeds of any sales.

Be that as it may, if Tom and Scotty are no longer selling these recordings, I can burn you CDs of them.

This seems an appropriate time to mention that I still have quite a few copies of the DVD sitting in a box in my garage. I thought they would all be gone by now.

b0b also has 60 copies for sale.

These things aren't going to be around forever. Those of you who don't already have the DVD really ought to get one. Either from me, or from b0b.

Curly's albums are great, and the DVD is even better IMHO. This is because it's organic... you see him in a live setting with excellent musicians that turn him on, playing for appreciative audiences. Worth the price of admission, definitely.

Thanks guys for the info and help to lead me in a direction. In the 70's when I began playing steel, I fortunately heard him play at the VIP room in Nashville, and was well beyond amazed. I do not know the other 3 players, but they were super as well. Thanks BL

All Chalker's recordings are essential but if you really want to study his music - the DVD Mike Perlowin and b0b have for sale is invaluable. It really helps to be able to see where on the fretboard Chalker is voicing his chords and this can unlock the key to the music on his LP's and recordings as a sideman. A lot of his music can be adapted to factory C-6th. However - a lot of what makes Chalker Chalker is his low A string and the voicings, tone and sheer force he gets from it. You can't get that on C-6th.

"Nevada Breaks" recorded live in a Vegas lounge really captures Chalker in his element where he really excelled. I think his greatest sound was when he played a Fender like on Merle Travis' "Travis!" (Capitol ST 1664) and on "Big Hits on Big Steel." We'll never hear that tone again.

I have if i haven't lost it i have a cassete tape of Curly playing at a club in Vegas back in the early 70s or late 60s He and the band were letting it all hang out. Of course the audio is not great as it was made on a small recorder but i never heard him play better. He was playing so far out he was on his way back. Maybe it was he had no one telling him how to play. It was a jam session. Tracy

Curly had his own style because he thought more like other instruments. He listened to piano players for their approach. The brass of the Big Band inspired his C6 playing. In backing singers on slow songs, he would approach it like a cello, as heard on some HeeHaw songs by Roy Clark. His mind wasn't just locked into the steel itself. That's one of many reasons he was one a kind. The likes we'll never see again.

Was all of the music (and Curly's steel) pre recorded in the Willburn Brothers shows or was it all done on the fly?

Either way, Curly is a genius!

Since Curly is being discussed, this is a good time to mention that I still have hundreds of copies of the DVD sitting in boxes in my garage.

Since this project has finally paid for itself. I'm lowering the price to $15 plus shipping costs.

Marino, Thanks for the kinds words about my recordings.

It is my understanding that the postal rate to send packages to Europe is roughly double that of domestic shipping. I estimate that will come to between $6 and $7.00, but today is a holiday and the post office is closed. I'll get the exact rate tomorrow.

Meanwhile if you send me your mailing address, I'll prepare an address label for you.

Marino, the total cost of the DVD + shipping to Switzerland, or any other country for that matter, comes to $22.50 (American dollars of course.)

I can take Pay Pal, or you can send me a personal check.

Thanks for the heads up on my stuff.
