So a while back, I was sniffing around, asking what kind of speaker is a good dual-purpose for both guitar and steel, because frankly, I was resigned to the idea of taking guitar and steel to gigs and not wanting to have to use a moving van to get it done...
Well, it's kind of a moot point now because I'm out of gig mode, but even still, I found an interesting combination. I recently got a Roland Jazz Chorus-120 because I've wanted one for years, and I've been out of a good guitar amp for a long time now. Naturally, it was a foregone conclusion that I'd want to see how it did with steel...not bad, although the pre seemed to break up a little here and there (maybe I was imagining it but I don't know). Still, I was curious to see what would happen with a bona-fide steel pre and nothing but the power amps and speakers in the 120 working. Well, I have an Evans ESPA preamp for that job, and I also have had a mind to use my old Alesis Midiverb-II for reverb. It's kind of late here where I live, so I'm not sure what it sounds like at real world volume, but at really low volume (my main focus, especially these days) it sounds actually pretty good (the stereo sound is also a nice touch for home use). Not too surprising, considering that the 120 is a relatively flat solid state amp, which is what I want for steel...but I think I could also see using this rig for any gig work in the future...with a guitar.
I'm sure I'll still keep a Peavey Black Widow 15" around in case I need to record some steel (I do the condenser-in-the-middle thing, as described on Paul Franklin's website...works like a charm, every time).
