Derby Steel

Post by Robert Herr »

I just bought a used Derby single neck on a double frame. It is in excellent shape,I notice it does not have the E-66 pickup, but was told it has an Emmons 108 pickup in it.I know standard Derby's come with the E-66, any ideas on what the difference would be between the E-66 and the Emmons 108?

Robert I do not know about this particular Emmons pickup, but the Derby usually comes with an E-66 pickup. You can call Charlie Stepp in Brooks KY. His number is (502) 957-1059 and he will be able to help you.You have purchased a great guitar and I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy mine.

Thanks , I talked to Charley, and forgot to ask him how hard is it to change the pickup on the Derby? You are right it is a great steel guitar.

Robert, the Emmons 108 is their optional Humbucker Pickup..Its more or less equal to The GL , E-66..It maybe a bit more on lows and less on highs than a E-66..

Changing the pickup is pretty much the same as on any PSG..The biggest job is getting the strings all off and then back on..There are 4 screws in the base of the pickup bobbin, and then unsolder/resolder the leads..
