had a young man going to Cornell come by for a lesson.. Shows up with a mint Expo... .. I gave it the once over as part of the "deal" and did a quick set up and tuning, adjusted the pedal height which was WAY too high, and adjusted the lower spring tension on the 2 and 9 strings as you had to push the steel a foot to the right to hit the 2nd string 2 step lower.. So after about 5 full minutes of tweaks and tuning , I sat down to this guitar and was mightily impressed.. It sang long and sweet, and played absolutely like butter.. To be perfectly honest, I am not a big GFI guy, and when a student brought a GFI Ultra around, I just didn't like it that much.. Not as much as I like the Expo.. The Expo played nicer, had sweeter tone, More "vintagy" old school steel tone.. and better sustain... Could just be the 2 guitars, but I really like the Expo a lot better than the Ultras I have played and heard locally.. I don't see how a "lower end" steel could be any better... bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

Dunno, but I have a GFI Ultra that I thought sounded awful, was mechanically unstable with excessive body-drop and hysteresis, and it had next to no sustain when I got it - a year or so ago. Changing type/brand of strings, fine-tuning the mechanics, and adding an impedance converter in the sound-chain, made it come alive to the point that it now is competing extremely well with my Dekley and MSA steels on stability, tone and sustain.
My conclusion so far is that this light PSG is somewhat "delicate", and needs the right strings and load to perform its best. |

I use .013, .015, .0115, .014, .017, .022w, .026w, .030w, .034w and .038w on my Ultra keyless, for improved tonal balance and less bodydrop and hysteresis. |

i have my GFI Ultra S10 for about 4 years. it`s my first steel i admit but i had the chance to play a few others including zumsteel franklin and a push pull emmons S 10 just a week ago (very fine guitar i thought).
all i can say that i still ike my GFI and never had any problems with it. i have a truetone on it and i do love the sound and the reliability of the instrument. one day i get me a second steel but don`t know what brand yet.

I didn't touch the drop return spring adjustments on the RKR on my wife's GFI Expo S-10. The knee lever works good and there is a definite "feel stop" for the 2nd string lower. It's not as easy as my Franklin but not "tight" and the guitar doesn't move when I operate any of the knee levers. I guess if you push them hard it would move, but there is no reason to do that.
It has the stock GFI II pickup (George L's) and it too isn't bad. I have George L's "Nashville" gauges strings on it (SS wound).
I've taken the GFI out on a couple of quick 2 hour gigs and it worked fine and sounded good using either a stock Nashville 112 or my MB200/Eminence EPS-15C amp.
It's not in the same league as my Franklin but overall not a bad guitar. |

Could someone tell me the string spacing at the nut on a gfi ultra? Just the overall width will work> |
