Need advise on a repertoire

Post by Arne Odegard »

I need to find about 20 songs, that include steel guitar. for a typical country danse band I'd like to start. I'm hoping for a repertoire of songs that are sure winners for bringing people out on the dance floor. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Arne,
That sure is a tall order!
"Typical" songs to what kind of dancers? What age?
Too little is known here but off the top of my head I will suggest these songs. They may be a hit - or miss.
Early evening:
(Think Charley Pride Live at Panther Hall)
Six Days on the Road
Cotton Fields
Slow it down a bit:
Leavin' on Her Mind
Crystal Chandeliers

Truck Drivin' Man (Share this with the lead player)
Fightin' side of Me(Lead guitar- it can't be all steel ya know)
Heartaches by the Number
Charley's Shoes
My Shoes keep walking back to You

By now people are getting drunk. They'll want the "snuggle up songs"
Livin' on Love (Alan Jackson)
Take Me as I am or let Me go
Farewell Party

Two Jim Reeves songs are a must in Norway
He'll have to go
I love you because E9th slow type(steel instrumental; people there know this one off by heart anyway)
5 to go...no people are well on their way. Go nuts with some Ray Price stuff
The other Woman
Heart over Mind
Touch My Heart
Crazy Arms

Finish off with:
Goodnight Irene (invent some pretty steel here)

I'll go out on a limb here and theorize that classic country dance goes over everywhere.IMO the artists who did that best are George Strait,Waylon(and Willie),Merle Haggard,Buck Owens, and Ray Price. If you have a girl in the band,Tammy and Loretta will do just fine.If all of their #1's don't fill up your set,add in some #1's from Dwight Yoakam,Alan Jackson,Garth Brooks and a few goodies from "Urban Cowboy".
