12 string E9th/B6th Universal
How many play this tuning,and would care to post their set-up. Thanks.

I've got a Mullen U-12. 8 pedals, 5 levers.
A,B,C pedals are standard Emmons setup.
4-8 are standard C6 copedants
LKL is E's up to F's (on 4 and
LKR is B (6th string) down a half step
LKV is F# up to G (on 1 and 7)
RKL is E's down to D# (on 4 and
RKR is B(9) up to D and D#(2) down two stops
Pretty basic and it works great for me. Easy to go in and out of the B6 mode while playing. Simply RKL and viola. I also have a lock for the RKL if I want to stay in that mode for a whole song.

Pedal 3 lowers 1 and 7 a half tone. Also, raises 11 a half tone. And, raises 12 a whole tone. (pedal 5 on a D-10).
Pedal 4 raises 5 and 6 a whole tone. (pedal 7 on a D-10).
Pedal 5 raises 9 a half tone. It lowers 11 a half tone and lowers 12 a tone and a half. (pedal 8 on a D-10).
Pedal 6 lowers 4 a tone and a half. Also, raises 11 a whole tone.
LKL raises 4, 8 and 11 a half tone.
LKL2 lowers 2 a half tone. And raises 9 and 10 a tone and a half.
LKVL raises 4 and 8 a whole tone. (Makes up for no C pedal).
LKVR lowers 5 a half tone. (C to B knee lever on a D-10 using C neck). "Splits" with pedal 1 AND Pedal 4.
LKR lowers 4 and 8 a half tone.
RKL raises 1 a whole tone. Also, raises 2 a half tone and lowers 6 a whole tone. ( I do NOT like this. These changes should be on separate knee levers). "Splits" with B pedal.
RKR raises 4 a half tone. And lowers 8 a whole tone. (Pedal 6 on a D-10). "Splits" with LKR and pedal 6.

I have almost followed the standard Sierra Session 12 (8/5) setup. Only two things I've changed is my LKR now lowers 2 a tone as well as lowering the E's, and my RKL only lowers the top B instead of 5 & 9.
I'm sometimes tempted to make other changes but then I think its probably a better idea to learn to play a bit better with what I've got first

raises are red, lowers are blue... I like my U12, how about you
I don't use LL2 or Pedal 5 often. I may change them to other functions

Lloyd Green 12 string Sho-Bud,seven pedal five knee, natural laquar. Wow! I have one for the person that wants a 12 string universal steel that sounds as good as a studio 10 string.This is not the buy and sell section I know, but the reason I'm posting here is to let everyone know that you can get incredible tone from a U-12. This guitar is for sale but is living proof that the typical tone loss of going to a 12 string doesn't have to be tolorated.

I usually don't get complaints about the sound of my push-pull U-12 (the Fessy either, for that matter).
Buddy mentioned one time that he held the common prejudice that 12-strings lack a little something in the tone department. He played his basket weave S-12 on a session and I believe his comment was that it sounded just like his push-pull D-10.
Just my perspective.

I think Buddy refered to the tone difference as "brain floss" He thought the tone was a little different in the beginning, but after hearing the U-12 played back on a recording, he found no differnce between the U-12 and his D-10 p/p.
I've heard the same complaint from D-10 players that don't care for the U-12 concept. I know a couple of experienced D-10 players that tried a U-12 for a while. Usually ends up with two complaints: Can't get used to the tuning and the tone isn't the same. I can understand the first dislike, but I could hear no difference in tone when the guitars are the same brand and pickup.
I've owned a few guitars in the 33yrs that I've been playing. Three were D-10s and two U-12s. I've never had better tone than the 1983 U-12 Zum GeorgeL pickup that I currently play.

I played D-12's and now play a Universal. My double neck has a beefier pickup on the C6 neck. I do miss the tonal changes from one neck to the other on the Universal.

Pete, that's one of the reasons I'm thinking about going back to a D-12. To get the pedal and knee lever changes I had before onto a single tuning, I'd have to go to two sets of knee levers again, and have to move my left knee to use them. Even then I would run out of changer holes to use. If I had to hit a pickup switch too, the only advantage of going to one tuning would be the saving of 5-10 pounds of weight.
