Does Willie Nelson use steel player?
Willie Nelson is giving a concert in Denmark in June. I haven`t been able to get any info
on his backup band.
Does anybody know if he usually includes a steel player when on tour?

I have seen him with a steel on TV-but never live. Usually it's just Mickey Raphael on harmonica.

Fred Newell played with him on the Opry spot Saturday night. With the number of guitarists (plus Willie himself), his sister on piano, Mickey R on harp, etc. there ain't much room for a steel guitar in the live show.
I've always kinda wondered if pedal steel isn't reminiscent of Nashville and the 'Nashville sound' that Willie stays judiciously away from.

One night years ago, Jody Payne, Willie's under-utilized lead guitarist, told me --after he and I and Willie played together--how much he really loved my playing. I thanked him sincerely (I did allow him to go on and on for a little bit), and told him I would be willing to see what I could do to possibly arrange things to make myself available for Willie's band. He said, "If had to give up one more solo..." and the look on his face finished the rest of the sentence.
I'm very pleased to see Greg Liesz doing some playing with Willie. He's a fine player.
