For the pa system for my wife's band, I want to go with powered monitors rather than a power amp and passive monitors. We have an old Peavey 6 channel head, and it is fine for us. It has a line level monitor out.

Ideally, I'd like to find monitors small enough to clamp to a mic stand, but I can deal with wedges also.

Low price is key. I've thought about buying power amp modules and building cabinets and such. But, I just now ran across these:

http://www.amazon.com/PYLE-PRO-PPHP803MU-Powered-Two-Way-Speaker/dp/B0071V3EBI

I've seen them as low as $115 shipped! It seems like if I worked out a way to angle these up, they would make fine monitors. A bit too large for attaching to the mic stand tho. I like the idea of powered monitors for many reasons, including the ability to keep adding on more as required.

Any experience with these or suggestions for cheap, small powered monitors, even if I build them myself?

Wow- now we are talking! $40. Probably worth trying one out.

Thanks!

$40 for something with the Altec-Lansing brand? Sounds waaaay too good to be true!Of everything I've read about and used,I like Galaxy Audio's Hot Spot the best.Although Galaxy does make a powered Hot Spot,it's pricey and it might be cost-advantageous to look into passive monitors and a lightweight power amp.

I do want to get up on my soapbox and say that wedge monitors put a lot of unnecessary decibels on the stage because the distance between the floor and a player's ear necessitates much more volume from a wedge than from a stand-mounted monitor.Unless you EQ carefully, the stage mix can turn to unintelligible mud very quickly.

Not to mention the hearing damage thread going on here now.OK,rant over Winking

That has long been my feeling- it would be better the get each performer's monitor as close to their ears as possible- lower volume, less feedback, individual setting of volume, etc. In-ears would be ideal I suppose- never tried them.

These Altec things also have a $20 shipping fee, so really the price is $60 each. Still, I may order one just to see..I'd need/want to install 1/4" plugs for daisy chaining the signal.

Hi Lynn,

We've gone with four of these Mackie compact monitors for our band and have stopped using floor wedges. They are self-powered and fit perfectly on a mic stand and work great using the line out on the Mackie 8 channel mixer we use along with the Mackie, or the larger JBL mains I have.

Here is a link for more information.

I've been able to buy very nice used ones and they fit rather nicely in a Samsonite makeup/train case!

It looks like those LANSINGS only have an RCA plug on them tho . Oh Well

80W max into a 6-1/2 spkr might not do any good coming from a wedge on the floor Oh Well

Right- I would install 2 1/4" phone jacks so they can daisy chain. I just wonder how much oomph these have.

I just saw that Amazon has the Altec speakers for $37 and they qualify for free shipping!

I'm thinking, attach a mic stand adaptor to the bottom, and dedicate a mic stand to each monitor. The height and posn could be perfectly adjusted for each performer.

Lynn, I just bought and used on one gig the Behringer B205D 150 watt hot spot. Almost identical to the Mackie model, but just half the price, $149. So far I love it.

One really useful tweak: I bought a Galaxy Audio mic splitter, 1 in, 2 out. I plug my mic into the input, and then send one out to the typical simple PA head used by most country bands in small clubs. The second out goes to the Behringer. A line out or monitor send from the PA goes to the other input on the Behringer.

So: I can bring up the overall all-vocals audio on input 2, and bring my own mic up or down independently on input 1 to suit my needs. Fab way to do this.

There is a mic through jack on the back of it but I discovered if you send that to the PA, any changes made on the Behringer are sent to the PA. The splitter fixes all that and is a godsend for hearing yourself sing.

That xlr out on the back can be used to string a bunch of these together, perfect for your band needs.

It has high/mid/low controls, ton of power (Class D 150w), and is very light, affixes to a mic stand, and you can even attach a boom on top of the Behringer.

So far I love the thing. Check it out!
