What is the best replacement pot for these pedals. I suppose it needs to be a linear pot of sorts? maybe 500k

Audio, not linear. I'd recommend the Dunlop pot that Forumites Tom Bradshaw and Jerry Roller sell. They're in the range of thirty bucks, but by all reports they last.
Unless you're both good and careful with the solder gun, I'd ask them to solder leads on to them for you, they require more heat than normal and I ruined my first one.
If thirty bucks is too much, go to radio Shack and buy two of their three dollar pots, and take a solder kit to your gigs: I've not gotten more than 8 months out of an RS pot in years. One lasted a month. The Dunlop is built for a million cycle life. Even Curly Chalker would take awhile.

Certainly agree with Lane, I got a replacement from Tom about two years ago, It's still going strong. And oh yeah, if you don't like it, Tom will take it back, No questions asked.

Jerry Roller has the new "High Life" pots from Goodrich.
They are rated for 1 million rotations

Tom's Dunlop "Hot Pots" are good too
