Topic: PSG Theory and application Book? |

| I'm (hopefully) going to start working with an instructor on theory for E9( and getting know the neck and relationships to pedals. I've muddled through the neck notes, pedals, and how they correspond but a more in depth analysis would sure be nice. Is there anything out there in book form specfific for PSG? I've googled this and checked the forum but perhaps I'm not searching correctly. |

Mike Perlowin has excellent material on what you're looking for.
Fwiw, I highly suggest it along with the 'supplement' because it is
so well laid out and the subject matter is presented in way that
is easy to comprehend.

Hey guys, thanks for the heads up on my book.
There are any number of good books out there, and they all have the same information. The only differences are how that information is presented.
My books starts at the very beginning, and proceeds in logical order to get progressively more advanced. Each lesson expands on the previous one. I tried to present the material in a way that makes it easy to understand.
The book, which is published by Mel Bay Publications, is a general music theory book, and is not specifically about any single instrument. For that reason, I wrote a supplement for the steel guitar with a few tabbed out examples of things I wrote in the book, and an explanation of how the concepts in the book relate to the E9 pedals.
The supplement also contains a section on how to read music on the E9 neck.
I will e-mail the supplement for free to anybody who requests it.
The name of the book is "Music Theory In The Real World; A Practical Guide For Today's musicians".
It can be purchased or ordered at any store that sells Mel Bay books, but I think we should support our own venders like
Jim Palenscar and Scotty (both of whom carry it in their stores.)

Got one today from Jim Palenscar and he sent the supplement to me by email and I have a lot to read and put to use in my brain. I do know quite a bit already about chords and how they fit into songs but this lets me know how they are put together to make a certain chord. Got to see JD Maness at the store too. Really a nice person as well as Jim also. Kind of wish I lived here sometimes instead of Michigan so I could hang out with all the nice players in this area.RS

Hi, Chris, not to toot my own horn too loudly, but I have a new course out for E9 teaching theory and the number system for understanding your guitar and how to build and find chords and positions all over the neck.
It sounds like it might really be of some help to you. |

Chris, if Mark won't toot his horn, let me....
I purchased his "E9 Theory" course a couple months back, and it is fabulous. Mark does a great job of not only leading you through music theory, BUT ALSO relating it to the E9th neck every step of the way. So even if you're already up to speed in your basic theory, which I pretty much was, the applications to E9 that Mark teaches are invaluable.
For instance, it's one thing to understand what a suspended chord is, or a 13th chord...it's quite another to know how and where to find and play them on E9th. Also, there are lots of chord substitutions, partial chords, scales and harmonized scales that, even if you know the theory, you won't necessarily know the best way to play these on the guitar.
I'd encourage you to get this course and go through it 3-4 times while sitting at your guitar. |

The book itself is pure theory, without any references to the steel or any other instrument. The supplement, which I will E-mail for free to anybody who buys the book, explains how the concepts in the book relate to what the pedals and knee levers do, and contains tabs of some of the things in the book.
The supplement also contains my method of learning how to sight read conventional musical notation on the steel.

| Another ++ for Mark's Course. At first I was upset that Mark didn't include written material with the two CDs but found out that the information he asked you to write down has "STUCK" in my few remaining brain cells much better than reading over pre printed material. I burned through the first CD in two mornings, before work, copying down the pertinent information long hand and am on #19 of the second CD. the other nice thing about the CD's is I can put them in my CD rotation in my car and reinforce the information while driving. It is the first time I've been able to do two things at the same time... |
