John Cruz with Patti Maxine on Steel

Post by Norman Markowitz »

This last Friday, John Cruz made what has become an annual visit from Hawai'i to the Santa Cruz area of California. As in past years, he invited our local steel guitar player Patti Maxine to join him on stage. She was on stage for the whole show. The thing that gets me is that John and Patti see each other once a year, just before the concert starts, and never practice or rehearse at all.

Here is a little sample of how well they blend their talents together.

That is so good, I could cry. Her tone and taste are incredible -- that's the sound I aspire to. Unreal.

Hi Ron. Don't know the status of Cruztone guitars but yes, the one in the videos I posted is a Cruztone. She also had a second lapsteel on stage with her that night. She would alternate between the two. Here is a video of her playing that guitar, shot at a different concert, where again she was invited to sit in. This time with Kimo West.

She told me who made it, but I have forgotten who. I do remember that she said it was made from bamboo.

CruzTone

Just letting you know that CruzTone steels are still available. Also, Sylvan music in Santa Cruz has a 6 string and an 8 string, both with 2 Lollar/Aiello pickups in stock.

Her playing on Baby's Gone Blues is fabulous. Any one know what tuning she was in for that? I'm guessing Open E?

Patti's tuning

She plays in A6 95% of the time. I set her Hipshot tailpiece for A6/ E13 but I can see it is in the A6 position

Just missed her in Hawaii

I found out from KonaBob on Sunday she played in Waimea last Saturday night. I was 45 minutes away in Waikaloa.
That always happens to me! Can't complain about being on the BI though.

OK. Thanks for getting my jones on for yet another lapsteel. Those Cruztones look nice.

And Ms. Maxine sounds great.

Those of you on the Island Of Hawai'i are blessed to have Ben Kaili living there. Those of us on the Island Of Santa Cruz are blessed to have Patti Maxine living here. But the two of them always love jamming together whenever they can.
