Started off to the gig. Forgot my Mp3 player that we use to play break music. Had to turn around and go home (only a few blocks away). 2nd song, broke 3rd string (gotta go back to Jagwires). Reached around to turn amp off. Spilled beer down front of amp. S#!T. Changed string. Got my Stroboflip to tune up. Beer on tuner too. Dripped beer onto steel. If there was ever a good argument for drugs (we're talking heroin here), tonight was the night. Played Sleepwalk. The notes for the chorus must have been washed off my guitar by the beer drops. They were no where to be found.

Whoa! Laughing Whoa! Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Laughing Whoa!

yep...some nights just go that way...thankfully , not too many. We all forget things, and strings break but, spilling beer on your amp and steel is just plain alcohol abuse! Smile I got one of those clip-on things that can hold a beverage on the side of my steel if I wish. pretty sure I bought it off the Forum. I once spilled beer down the top of an amp that had the vent on top!!!....not a pretty picture. I am sure your next gig will go better.

I had a bad one Friday night... constantly lost, lots of clams, never landing on the right fret. Then last night, I must have been channeling some better player... I could do no wrong.

Never put any liquid on top of your amp...or let anyone else. It's an accident waiting to happen. Not a matter of if, but when.

I've P.O.'d some of my best musician friends by not letting them sit things on my amp.

Sit it on the floor, or anywhere else. It just makes a mess on the floor, you can clean it up.

Strings gonna break, I don't care what brand you use, unless you play a Williams, Excel etc., but you already know that.

I hate break music between sets. I suspect most of the audience does too. Breaks are the only time they get a respite from the racket so they can talk to each other. It depends on the situation though, party crowds like to keep it going between sets if they're gettin' drunk.

The guys I play with have to have music playing through the PA at every opportunity. I can see using it to set up the system etc.

Anyhow, your next one will probably be a breeze. These troublesome gigs really make us appreciate the smooth ones.

I think we've all been there.

I once played a job on a six inch stage. A drunk came up to request a song, leaning his weight on my steel! The rear legs telescoped in pinning me in my seat! My spare bar rolled off the steel landing perfectly in my scoth and soda, breaking the glass and soaking my left leg. I pushed the guy off me and almost started a bar brawl! Almost took up knitting..LOL...JS

Hey, at least you are out there playing. Gigs are getting hard to get in some area's. !!

I will share one of my playing experience with you though. Many, and I mean many years ago, I was playing this little fun place in NJ called the Landslide. We played there one weekend every month. The place is still open today as a NJ forumite sends me a few pictures now and then.

The bands setup area was level with, and right at the edge of the dance floor. One night we were playing and a girl on the dance floor was putting on a good show, as she was at the point of "feeling no pain". We started playing one of the fast old rock and roll songs and she lost it and fell butt first, backwards over my ShoBud Pro 3. I started to raise up and did my best to catch her but the outcome was that she fell all of the way over the steel and we both ended up on the floor. Fortunately, there was no damage to the steel other than it had to be leveled again before playing.

Needless to say, It was a show stopper.

I have a video somewhere of a gig I did where you can see the guitar player's drink on top of the house amp slowly moving back with each loud chord until, ultimately, it completely tips over and fries the Fender amp. He struggled with trying to get sound to no avail for a minute until I turned around and pointed to the large sign on top of the amp that read, "NO DRINKS ON AMPS!" We burst out laughing, because he was the booking agent at the club and he probably put the sign there. Laughing

I had a drunk (truck driver) come up one night to request a song, who tripped and fell into my emmons pedal rods, which looked like spaghetti after, i was not happy. Had to buy a new set, they will not straighten. Was this where 'truck drivin man' was written?

Gosh - where to begin. Most infamous of recent times was 'working' with a former 'drummer' who showed up to a gig in pajama bottoms, fuzzy slippers, drunk as a skunk. Kept yelling from his drum throne "bring me a nother drink" and hollering like he had Tourette's.

Then there was the time many years ago I got shot at by a jealous husband at a gig - turned out he was supposed to be shooting at the bass player, and got confused.

(disclaimer - I'm not a steel man. Still OK to post?)

Hello John

I hear that Barbara is still running the "slide". I lived within 10 miles of there for roughly 40 years.

I dont want to "hi jack" this thread so I will end this with the fact that almost every musician has had some type of wierd or bad experience that can be reflected back on.

HI Mike

I cant really say that I know Walter.
I did know a Barry Walter from Reigelsville PA. He was a real steel enthusiast and even tried to play a little on a Showbud that I sold him.

Actually, I never do (amp is on a stand and tilted up). I had my case next to my amp standing up on end and the beer and tuner were on top of that. Most places I just set the beer next to me on the floor. This place, I had to play on the floor and the dancers have to walk past me to get to the dance floor. I need one of those drink holders that were mentioned.

Over the last 40 years, I have some real war stories I could shock you with, including, one time a couple were swing dancing and he threw her and couldn't catch her. She hit butt first into my pedal rods, bending all 5 (S10 at the time), my guitar and I tumbled backwards and hit the table my amp was on and it fell onto my chest breaking 2 ribs. I was one of those real light amps, Twin Reverb with Jbl's Whoa! Whoa!

I use Jagwires and never break strings on my Carter unless I leave them on too long. I was trying a D'Addario .0115 and that is the one that broke. I had a Wiliams 600 series and broke more strings on it that I ever broke on my Carter. And, I used Jagwires on it too.

Jesus H.--talk about the domino effect....

I have some real good ones, too. Sax player I worked with decided to jump off the stage and work the crowd, but his foot tangled in the mic cables and he went down off the stage hard, taking all the horn section's music stands with him--books and pages scattered all over the place and on top of him. Still kills me to think about it to this day.

Ray: I remember Barry Walter from Riegelsville. He and his wife Jean came out many, many times back in the 90's when I used to play at Vicki's Hideaway, which has since burned down. They were two of the nicest people you could ever meet, and you're right...Barry loved pedal steel.

Would Barry Walter be a guy who took some lessons with Eddie Alkire? There's a guy whose name I thought was Walter who comes out when at the Landslide and he and his wife are real steel enthusiasts. I know he has a pedal steel, but he also has an Alkire.
