Hi Fellas:

I recently bought an old Silvertone 1316 and I am trying to bring her back to her original glory. The problem is one of the tuner gear/shaft/bushing is missing (see pics). I have seen new complete tuner replacements on eBay but not sure if that is the way to go. I typically like to keep things as original as possible. Is it worth the trouble? Are parts (gear/shaft/bushing) to fit this available anywhere? If not should I try to locate old stuff or dam the vintage stuff and get a set of new ones. If so any idea as to the ones that will fit with the least problems (fewest new holes)?

Hi David,
I have a box full of old tuner parts, and most likely can help out if you want to restore the old ones. Looks like you need the shaft, gear, slotted screw and ferrule. If you could give me the diameter and length of the shaft, and if you could take off the gear on one of the other tuners and see if it fits on with a round star-like fitting or a rectangular one. Also the inside diameter of the peg hole would be helpful in finding the right ferrule. I can send you a few likely combinations, and you can send back what doesn't work.

Steward McDonald has replacement tuners and very good pictures and dimensions. I'll wager they have exact replacements.

DH,
Take one of the tuners apart, and post a pic of the end of the shaft. I also have a pile of these. Love the old amber look of the buttons!

I would go with StewMac's Economy 3-on-Plate Tuners for now, and worry about repairing the originals later. These are low end replacements designed for older guitars. $9.54 for a set of tuners... you can't go wrong! I buy three sets at a time just to have them on hand for old lap steels and guitars.

Thanks for all the help Guys - I will get the dimensions and take them apart as requested - more information to follow. I LOVE the old yellow buttons too so would love to keep the originals.

Also thanks for the tip on the Stew-mac tuners I have an old Sherwood that has the buttons disintegrated and it may be easier to just replace the tuners than the buttons (even cheaper).

BTW - any tips on a good chrome/metal cleaner to clean the metal on the 1319?

YES! California Custom Deoxidizer, and Purple Polish.

Far superior to anything else available. Plus,,, you'll use them for many other things around the house and garage. The Oxidizer is the key. Totally blows products like Simichrome and Magic Wadding off the map! They waste so much time and effort. Also, get Meguiar's Swirl Remover 2.0 to clean the body. Does a great job.

Here are some pics - I have others if needed. The post shaft appears to be 1 3/16 inches long and a shade under 1/4 inch diameter and is flat on two sides where the sprocket attaches - the sprocket has 12 teeth. The hole in the guitar headstock is a bit larger than 1/4 - appears to be 5/16 the or so with my old eyes. Let me know if you need any further information I GREATLY appreciate your help.

Hi David,
Sorry I did not see your post sooner. It got pushed down the page and I missed it. Anyway I think I found the parts you need. Maybe drop me a personal message with your address and I will send them. If they do not work let me know and I will send something else.
Good luck with the old Harmony. Those particular models have pickups they got from Gibson.
