Love it, that falsetto, gives me chickenskin!!! And that archtop - why isn't anyone making big non-cutaway archtops any more?
Anyway enough raving - they sure don't give the steeler any good shots, do they? Hope someone can identify him. |

Evidently the Cameraman did not have a clue when the Steel Guitar was being featured ! He thought all the music was coming out of the Standard Guitar. |

Thanks for the link, Anthony. Thats a nice version of the Song. I don't know who is on steel, but I'm sure as I can be that the drummer in Danny Stewart. He worked in Hollywood bands with a lot of different line-ups. So we can start a process of elimination. _________________ Don't go in the water after lunch. You'll get a cramp and drown. - Mother. |

Here is Eddie Bush as Paul suggested. As he was already working in the area, I think it is very likely him. And here is Danny Stewart. Most of these kinds of movies were mimed, so we don't really know who is playing. The steel even looks like Danny's guitar.

Great pics David, thanks - first one I've seen of Danny Stewart (of course, I'm a newb, so that ain't saying much). |

Mike, I'm a newb too, and I will remain so until I can get this persnickety violin-effect going. Eddie Bush is wearing a toupee in that picture as directed the Harry Owens TV staff. By the by, there are some half-decent archtops coming out of China. I think Elderly carries them. You can't beat a mic'ed archtop for that old-timey sound. Who needs a cutaway if you are playing rhythm section? _________________ Don't go in the water after lunch. You'll get a cramp and drown. - Mother. |

I can't identify the guitarist sitting down. The remaining members are Ernie Taveras on bass, Sam Kaapuni standing with guitar. Danny stewart on the drum, Danny Kuaana on uke/vocal and Bernie K. Lewis on steel. It's Bernie....trust me. |

Dave, you are probably right about Bernie Lewis. I do have a bit of a reservation based on the chronology. Here a pic of Bernie from Paradise Hawaiian Style 1966. Apart from the toupee, Bernie is looking quite spry considering about 15 or so years had passed between the two films.(my guess)

Ha, amen David! I have no lead guitar ambitions and never had. I love pure swing rhythm guitar on a big box like the one in the video. I have discovered one that I like, the Godin Fifth Avenue Kingpin, though the body is more slimline, not too big through the lower bouts, but still a real beauty: http://www.godinguitars.com/godin5thavenuekingpinp.htm. I also followed up on Elderly and found this Loar: http://elderly.com/new_instruments/names/the-loar-lh-309-vs-archtop-guitar--LH309VS.htm, so I expect to find a box I like before too long. |

Okay, I'm convinced its Bernie, and I'm also convinced you can always spot a rug. _________________ Don't go in the water after lunch. You'll get a cramp and drown. - Mother. |
