Back in the late 40s or early 50s I bought a red Echo-reverb box ( brand unknown) , about 5 in. square, that had one spring about 3/4 in. round and 4 in. long. The spring was plugged into & between two phono pickups and had a tube inside that was powered with several wires with loops on the ends that connected onto tubes in the amplifier. It did work but was very "clangy" on stage and I didn't use it too much !! Any of you oldetimers recall this unit ?? I finally did get a Fender reverb unit that worked out very well !! I just asked a question over in Steel Without Pedals where a Danelectro "echo box" was shown. This was before solid state reverb pedals and the box looked too small to contain an Accutronics type spring pan. Could have been something like you are describing.

I've never seen a unit like you describe.

I had a German made ECHOLETTE unit that had inputs for one instrument PLUS a PA-set.

It was a continuous loop machine and worked for me for many years altho' it wasn't the sound I'd really been looking for. The instruction manual was printed in German and proved to be of no value to me.

Just sold it about one year ago.......

Eddie back in around 58 or 59 I had a reverb unit. It was a box about 4 or 5 inches square and only had one knob. The springs were in a separate unit and were about like the springs in todays amps, but were very clangy like you say and would rattle like hell if anyone jumped or walked on stage. I mounted the springs on a post in front of my steel on the bandstand in a vertical position so they wouldn't rattle. This was at the Peacock club in San Angelo Tx. One night Ray Price was booked at the club for the next night. Buddy Emmons came out to the club that night and he said that's the first time that he had seen a reverb unit live. All he had ever seen was in a studio. Buddy probably won't remember that night, but I sure do. I've still got live witness's. Rolling Eyes

I had a few echo-plex units I believe made by Maestro. They had a little reel of quarter inch tape that would let you echo, or delay, or even a small loop.I have a recording of it somewhere.

The Echolette Ray is talking about was in my opinion the best delay unit ever built. I bought one in the early 60's,was so expensive had to get a bank loan,It lasted about three years and died, the problem back then you could'nt find anyone to service it. I used it on sixstring guitar and alto sax man did it sound great. YOU BETCHA,DYK?BC.
