Hi-
I'm trying to figure out if there's a way I can take my old Sho-Bud on an airline as checked baggage. For normal shipping I use my CushCase (inside an anvil flight case). That combo is WAY too heavy for the airlines. I've noticed some of you using the SKB-H3611 and foaming it yourselves, which makes sense (sturdy lightweight ATA molded plastic), but it's only 12" wide and the Pro-III is 12 1/2". Any ideas?
David
P.S. my guitar is 33 5/8" x 12 1/2" x 5 1/2" |

I was under the impression that the split cases are made of unreinforced plywood and would not hold up to being really knocked around. To stand up to the abuse of baggage handling I would think you would need something sturdier and more lightweight (like molded plastic) or heavier duty, like a reinforced flight case?? |

I asked Kevin Hatton about the idea of using one of his split cases to check my guitar as airline baggage. He said "My cases are NOT ATA rated for airline travel" which is what I figured. Not that they wouldn't work, they'd probably be fine until a heavy corner hit the middle of the case
Actually I've already had that problem with my old Anvil, nothing can withstand that kind of blow.
Anyone have any other ideas about where to find a lightweight ATA-style case (molded plastic) that's big enough for my guitar?
I have one more idea; there's this guy Bruce Lamb with a company called CaseExtreme (http://www.CaseExtreme.com) that makes cases out of corrugated plastic. I use one for my Sho-Bro, one for my mandolin. I don't even use a hardshell case inside it, just a gigbag. I bet this could work for a pedal steel body. What say you all?? |

David : Here's my suggestion -- Contact Dan Bentley in Hendersonville, Tn. I have one of his cases that is tough as nails and so light I can't tell the differance of the guitar and the guitar in the case, really ! Mine holds a Bud double ten or my LDG and I love it !!
I've been using it for over a year now--no problems.
Email me for his phone number if interested, I'm reluctant to post phone numbers here unless by permission. Bill.

Do you check your guitar as baggage much with this case? It looks like fibreboard (like inexpensive drum cases). Is that what it is? |

I don't fly, David -I do well to walk at my age - It is fiber board of some kind but certainly not soft- and I would say much thicker than what you are talking about. call Dan--he has a story about someone that had the air line drag it behind their crgo cart and the guitar was not damaged. Bill. |
