The Rhode Island Steel Guitar Association reviewed my new song book “60 Popular Melodies” in their December newsletter. The unedited review appears below. Much thanks to Marcia Rodrigues, RISGA President and all of the folks in this great organization.

Review: 60 Popular Melodies for E9 Pedal Steel Guitar by Doug Beaumier
By: Jim Rice
Summary: WOW, Great!

Just after Thanksgiving I decided that I couldn’t wait for Santa, so I ordered Doug Beaumier’s book of tabbed out solos for steel guitar. I thought $69 seemed like a lot of money, but I’ve been looking at the price of tabbed out songs from well known instructors and this seems pretty reasonable for so many songs. I also saw all those Christmas songs (11 including Auld Lang Syne) and thought I could learn a couple before the season was over. I was extremely happy in all respects, service, quality and content. My playing of these songs is another story….

The first thing I noticed about this book is the quality. The cover is strong, heavy duty with a good spiral binding that opens flat and sits well on the music stand. I can see this lasting a long time. The printing is high quality, large notes and tab, with clear pedal notations and chord symbols. The selection of tunes is great, everything from the classic Christmas carols to the standard tunes we could play at the jams like Crazy Arms, Cold, Cold Heart, Faded Love, Hey Good Lookin’, Tennessee Waltz and lots more. I was also pleased to see a few traditional songs like America, Amazing Grace, Star Spangled Banner and the Wedding March. There are even some standard fake book songs like Autumn Leaves, Moon River, Stardust and Unchained Melody and more.

As a beginner I was really happy to see that the arrangements were pretty simple and in standard keys (many are in the original recorded keys). For advanced players these arrangements may not offer much other than a starting point, but I can see how they can easily be jazzed up. I’m working up a Bakersfield version of Joy to the World!

Congrats to Doug on a really well thought out and produced book that fills a gap in the PSG tab. I strongly recommend this to beginning and intermediate players. For me it was worth every penny.

Doug, I haven't met this lady who has written such a warm review of your contributions to the learning process of the steel guitar. She apparently has heard of your exemplary reputation in the Northeast and its environs. Congratulations, and good luck with the distribution of your valued song book that features excellent tabulated entries.

After purchasing the book last Sunday, I just wrote down a # chart for Winter Wonderland, using Doug`s book as a reference. I will use my # chart tonight at the Middleboro VFW. Thank you Doug.

Doug,

You are very welcome. Several members of the club have purchased this book, including my husband who is also enjoying it.

Bill,

Please note, that I am not the one who wrote the review of the book. Jim Rice, one of the steel players in the RI Steel Guitar Association, wrote the review.
