Vert. knee lever

Post by Chuck Morel »

Curious if a vert, knee lever can be added to a carter starter.Would it even be worth the trouble?
Thanks CM

Vert Lever adding to Carter Starter

Post by Michael Maratos »

I had a second hand Carter Starter for a couple of years. It fitted my budget at the time, and I didn't know whether I would stick at playing PSG in the long run. I liked everything about it except that one of the knee levers needed adjusting regularly. I decided to upgrade to a "Professional" quality PSG - eventually purchased a Magnum Pro-Select, made by Carter, which also has a vertical knee lever.) Everything about it was superior to the Carter Starter - to be expected given the price difference. I would not recommend modifying the Carter Starter, but to go instead for a second hand or new "professional" quality PSG.

I rebuilt a Carter Starter some time back, new pull rods, bell cranks etc.reworked the finger changer too but there is not enough room to add a vert. knee to it,I had one that I did put on it but it just didn't work right so I took it off.I think by rebuilding it I spent enough to buy a good used pro. model. It did a good job but even after the rebuild I soon outgrew it so now I have a BSG(made by Don Burrows) & I love it.It has 3 & 5 SD-10/w pad.Blue(my color)

The Starter wasnt designed to be modified, but anything is possible. I dont think it would be worth it, though. Also, the RKL lowers string 5, which is a very common change for a vertical lever already.
