This link was buried in the Seth McFarlane thread so I thought it should be made more obvious. Wonderful lesson that to achieve the sublime takes a heck of a lot of hard work. The musicians had great respect for Sinatra 'cause he had radar-like ears attuned to catch a flubbed horn line or a miss-timed beat in very complicated arrangements.

Very cool. I'm a Sinatra freak - got it from my dad who used to dance to The Dorsey Band live with Frank when he was courting my mom.

...his poise in front of the mike is as amazing as his voice __ he AND Perry Como, so smooth.
He really doesn't need the cigarette prop; but it was part of Sinatra.

My favorite of his songs __ My Way.

I still think Songs For Swingin' Lovers may be the greatest record ever made. Still sounds incredible every time I hear it. He finest output was for Capitol.

Sintra's Capitol records are unsurpassed. I have the Sinatra/Jobim record and personally, I don't think his legato, long breath style works for Brazilian music as well as more rhythmic singers. But put him with Nelson Riddle and he's untouchable .... Even 50 years later.

FWIW, I've sung in Filipino karaoke bars and some roadside joints, too. They are karaoke crazy. I have some of my extended family with their own karaoke machines.

Sinatra was impossibly good..He was THE music of his generation. My parents introduced me to his music as a child. I always thought he was the coolest cat.
Great songs, arrangements, musicians.. His tracks with Jobim are so smooth.

I've seen a number of books that quote Sinatra saying that he developed his breath control in the swimming pool. Interesting that Jo Stafford debunks that story.

The rest of the book sample is probably pretty interesting but I didn't read it.

...do not know any history of the life of Sinatra, for sure, but:
There is a casino on the north shore of Lake Tahoe which was called Cal-Neva (California/Nevada border).
It is rumored that Sinatra once owned it; or he was in partnership with another owner.
Can anyone substantiate __ did he ever perform there?
