I have wondered who the steeler was on Hank Thompson’s Texas State Fair album. A skilled & knowledgable steeler friend, Bob Sies, thought the steeler was Bobby Garrett. It appears he was right. I found the following which I wrote to Bobbe Seymour:
Hi Bobbe,
I really enjoyed your insights in regard to Curly Chalker. I have an old 33 1/3 record of Hank Thompson doing the Texas State Fair, I think it was 1961 when it was recorded. I & a steeler friend wondered who played steel on that record. Then I found a publication I had/have of "Steel Guitarist" January 1980. In it Dr. Ralph W. Sheets tailed off on a series of articles about Western Swing wherein he credited Curly Chalker as being the steel man on that album [page 37]. The steel version of "Charmaine" & "River Road Rag" are right at the top of my all time favorite steel songs. Also the steel back up on that album is some of the best. It just doesn't get much better than what was done on that recording, in my opinion.
It appears to me that Bob Sies & the info I found on the Forum corrects the Dr. Sheets article/credit from Curly Chalker to Bobby Garrett. |
