BJ Cole, and then Melvin Duffy, with Mojave 3 - very lovely! My money's on straight slide guitar on LOVE SONGS ON THE RADIO, but I've been known to be wrong.
Imagine if Ivo Watts-Russell had chosen to use more pedal steel with, say, THIS MORTAL COIL. Wow....

if Ivo had used steel on It'll end in tears I probably worn out more than just the one vinyl copy. love that album.

WXRT here in Chicago has been playing this quite a bit. I really love it. The playing is very close to the type of thing I strive for with my band.

I feel fortunate that the bands and people with whom I work give me the freedom to play - nay, perhaps expect me to play - "outside the box". In fact, a recent offer to play old standards, if I have the time, has given me pause - I love old country, but playing that when I could be doing original music and continue developing my own style is not the most attractive of options to me.
Not disparaging the standards, just want to move forward.

Yes, Amos' site indicates (some members of) Calexico lent a helping hand, which would mean Paul Niehaus on pedal steel. I love how he uses effects between some of Calexico's (live) songs.
The live versions of Amos Lee feature a steeler who is decidedly not Paul, but is quite tasteful:

I recall the name Mazzy Star from years ago; the new song is quite nice, and here again, I wonder who's on steel? Seemingly no end to what our instrument can accomplish, given a chance.

Is that lap steel Rameses III uses? CDs with steel?

Hey Dan-
I play lap steel-I am learning pedal and loving it-but I'm not planning on sitting in with anyone soon-
playing it out for the first time this month-but lots of long tones-a pice for pedal, lap, ebow and field recordings-standard stuff!
High aura'd is just me-solo-

Rameses II is three guys-1 lap player, I guitarist, 1 keyboard dude

really beautiful-always a lap steel-influenced also by the Hired Hand soundtrack, which is amazing-Bruce Langhorne

Here's one with a lot of eBowed steel and some really poorly played "normal" steel licks in the middle. Round it out with cajon, tabla and uke.
