Country, Rock, Blues, Folk, "Singer-Songwriter", and original music I have no idea how to categorize.
I've done sessions for Rap, Cartoon music, Unidentifiable Jingles... It's all music to me.

I play mostly country, and as far as chords go, I notice a lot of 1's, 4's and 5's, with a 2 once in a while. One chord I do like is one I play over the 5 sometimes. If the 5 is at the 3rd fret, f'rinstance, I play strings 4, 5, 6 and 9 at that fret with the first pedal down, and then ease back into the 1, same fret, both pedals down. The trick is to either block the 9th string or lower it a half tone when you go to the 1.

I like to play the 1, 4, and 5. And of course, the occasional 2. And who amongst us could avoid the 2m. Not to be ignored is the 3, or the 4 over 5, or for that matter, the 3 over the 1. And there's the 5m over the 1, the 6 over the 1, the 2 over 4, the 6 over 4, et al.

Did I leave out the 7 over 5? It's a diminished substitution.

Then there's the passing chords, but that's for another poll.

the 2 over 4, the 6 over 4, et al.
And the Heart Over Mind.
The bestest chord is that 6/9 guitar players play at the 12th fret, where they get an open E or A in. I just can't find that voicing on a steel guitar.

We don't have that chord. We have our OWN ending chords that the guitarists envy.

BTW, I'm glad you mentioned the Heart over Mind chord. It's often confused with the I'm Not over You Yet chord, greatly favored by chick singers.

Hey, I apologize... sincerely... for the thread hi-jack. I'm just havin' a little fun.

I play whatever style the cats I'm playing with are doing. As a sideman, I'm there to add to what they're doing, not take it over.
I don't quite have enough of a grasp of jazz harmony to go much beyond 7ths, 9ths and 6ths.

And when I play Heart Over Mind, I quote "Girl From Ipanema." It fits.

Yeah, that Aug11th that Charleton was so fond of. Now that sounds really anemic on a guitar.
No hi-jack here. The OP wanted chords, eh?

I voted country. Thats what I enjoy playing on pedal steel guitar most of the time. Three chords and the truth, but, there must be at least a hundred chords to use just between the 5 and 1 chords. Im up to about 6 or 7 so far! I like jazz too, it uses all the chords. ;)

With the band I currently play with, the Shinolas, we do everything from Hank to the Ramones! Ryan Adams, Steve Earle, Doris Day, REK, Byrds, Credence, NRBQ,Beach Boys, Beatles, Wailin' Jennys, Sonny Rollins. We cover a lot of ground. Many styles. It's a blast for me. I could not see myself doing a straight country gig for any lenght of time.
