Has anyone ever noticed that the factory presets are named after topics in Ufology. Strange that Peavey chose those names. I've always wondered why they did this.
Most of you out there probrably dont have a clue to what I'm talking about. Plus, most of use the Newman presets anyway. But those who own one and have noticed the factory presets, you'll see what I mean. |

Cool. I would guess it's a hint at the Steve Vai/Joe Satriani influence. |

The TubeFex and TransTube Fex were just upgrades to the Profex II (and Bassfex). Many of the original parameters and names were carried forward to the Tube/Transtube Fex units and thus their backward capability with the Newman Profex II programs.
I developed my own programs as I found the Newman, (1) did not utilize the analog preamp and (2) with the TB added they still did not have the sound that the Tube/Transtube were capable of.
I don't know if Steve Vai/Joe Satriani were famous enough to have any influence on a manufacturer when the Profex I and later II was developed. |

Hi Ben, I've had almost all of the Peavey rack effects other than the Bass-fex. Yes I even the Profex 1 and never liked some of the effects such as chorus and most all of the modulation effects (speaking of the Profex 1). Then I got the profex 2 and really liked it but I was and still am an effects junkie not to say I use to much or to many of them but meaning I always was and still am looking for better and different types.
With that said I have owned most every major brand of rack mount digital effects I won't take time to mention everyone company but you name one and I've most likely owned one or two of the models they have made. One thing every single rack mount effect system that has a window for you or the makers to name the preset have always named their presets with crazy names.
I'm guessing that the crazier name that the guys programing the preset can give it the more they think it will stand out and get more attention to that particular preset. I say this mainly because no one person programs all of the presets it's most likely a whole team of programmers and one guy does one preset and then another guy does another and on and on. So I'm guessing the wilder they can name their own presets the more they think their presets will be noticed and maybe used and who doesn't like a little bragging rights
That is partially based on some facts from folks that I know who have helped program some of the actual presets and some guessing but it makes a good story huh? Have a good one!!

Out of 128 presets in version 1.1, about a dozen are related to ufology. My guess is that they may have been written by the same programmer, and as his signature way of standing out from the other factory patches used names like Cereology, A'le'inn, Grays and Cigar Ship.

what's interesting is that these were programmed in the mid 90's. A time when most of these topics were known only by very few people. Not like today when everything is on the net. Back then the net was still fairly limited compared to now. |

Also the spacial connotations come to mind. Lots of swirling .. deep space reverb and delay naturally lead to these si fi ref's. |

I sure missed a lot of those, you're onto something there! They must have listened to all those underground Bob Lazar UFO tapes back in the late 80s, or else maybe they really did work for NASA before programming those space effect patches for Peavey, haha.

That's funny.
However, I do believe someone on the programming side was very interested in Ufology back then. When these units were programmed back in the mid 90's, info on the mattter was a lot more scarce. They must have been a a pretty avid researcher.
Anyway. I just thought this was interesting to talk about even though it is way off subject from steel guitars. |
