After years of trying to find the right setup for me, I was fortunate to stumble across something the other day which has made a big improvement for me in tone.

When I record I go direct into my recording board through an Avalon preamp and just love the tone. Full and clear all the way to the top registers of the instrument. I was never able to achieve that doing gigs with a traditional setup and it occurred to me that most steel rigs do not have a speaker capable of reproducing the higher frequencies. I went into guitar center and heard a QSC K 10 powered two way cabinet and decided to try. All I can say is WOW, it sounds amazing. With the Revelation Preamp the sound is full and clean with the best string separation I have ever heard coming from me.

The QSC is a 1000 watt (no typo) with 500 going to the upper end speaker and same for the lower. IMHO, that spec is somewhat overrated but for me there is plenty of power.

To make sure that I am not just in love with a new piece of gear, I went to Mickey Adams house today and he gave it a test run as well. He was very impressed and thought it was one of the best sounding rigs that he has ever heard. I know he will chime in here as well.

As always everyone hears something different and has different wants. Your mileage may vary. I am donig a gig on Thursday and we will see how it performs on a live venue.

Thanks for taking the time to read.

Regards,

M

PS Please feel free to enter your opinions. It is always a learning curve for me.

Having a good steel "released" directly through a full-range sound-chain, can only be a good thing.

Specs for the QSC K 10 don't reveal as many details as I would like to see for such systems, and from what little is written it seems to roll off a bit sharply at the lower end. Range and power should be plenty for E9/C6 PSGs though, and the roll-off towards the bottom should ensure clarity.

Please report back when you have tried it out live.

Hi Georg,

Thanks for the reply. I prefer tight bass and the definition of the notes is absolutely there. For guys that really like that "womp" on the bottom end, this may not be the answer although placing this on the floor does produce some punch.

This is used mainly as my reference monitor when doing gigs and as I am a primarily an e9th player, the lower end is not so much a factor for me as it may be for others.

Am going to take a look at the specs now.

regards,

M

Thanks for reminding me. I've meant to try going in with the Avalon but never got around to it. I'll do that today. I know your post is about speakers but would you mind posting your Avalon settings? I assume you keep the compressor off.

Hi Scott,

Here are my settings for the Avalon. My Avalon is in my recording rack and have not tried the cabinet with it so the settings are to process through the Mackie HR824. I may hook it up today just to try it.

Preamp gain 12 oclock
High Gain on
No Compression

the following numbers represent positions on a clock.
example 1 would be 1 o'clock

Bass 2 Mid 10 High Mid 1 Treble 2 Output 2

4 LED's under eq are off

Shelving

150 200 1KZ 25KZ

Again I use this mainly for practicing. If I amm going to record something, I hook the rev up to the board.

May not be perfect, but at least it is a starting point.

If you find something, that sounds good to you, please let me know. Always interested in trying something new

Regards

M

I have to agree with Mark completely...Best sound all around I've ever gotten from a PSG rig...I am currently waiting on a new Evans JE200..(which should be here today), and I also own an Avalon. If I don't get what I want from the Evans...Ill be marching down to Guitar Center and buying 2 of those "bad boys"...And calling Brad Sarno for another Rev as well...Mark, I worked on the Red 84 Mullen for a few hours last night and got everything working perfectly...I wish I would have plugged IT in to your rig too!!....

Thanks Mark, always good to have a starting point. Lately I've been going straight in to Reaper (using Akai DPS24 as interface via ADAT) and playing with amp sims. The best sim I've found for steel is Amplitube. I like POD Farm but Amplitube sounds fuller to me. Ive been using the Fender Twin with some Bassman mixed in. I've got a ways to go to find what I really like though & think the Avalon might help quite a bit. Of course micing real amps would be optimum but not in my teenie room.

Sarno's Revelation Pre will make everything sound better. Fantasic preamp for steel. Interesting post.

Mark/Mickey,
You don't typically think of a single 10" for low end. It would seem like you've got all the high end here you'd ever need.. but what about the bottom end?
Compared to a JBL 15"?

Charlie,

These are full range speakers and produce a good amount of bottom. Also if you put them on the floor they get a really rich full bottom end. Neither Mickey or I have had a chance to use them in a live situation, so it's hard to say for sure. My gig got rained out last Thursday, but rescheduled for this Thursday.

Also, I am using this as a reference for me at gigs. I normally am wired directly into the PA. This speaker could fill a small room with no difficulty.

On the other hand, Mickey does not get into the PA when he plays out and will dependent on the speakers doing the job to fill a room. Hopefully we will have some interesting input in the days to come.

Regards,

Mark

PS I use Mackie HR824 near field monitors in my studio. I A/B ed one of these to the Mackie and they are pretty close. Also, I did a session here and the bass player wanted to know where my sub woofer was hidden. When he found out that there wasn't one, he was quite amazed.

The QSC K 10 do you lay it on it's side or leave it standing up?

Have tried it both ways at the house. If it elevated, I did not hear much difference. The bass response increases somewhat when on the floor. Will have a report after the gig

Mickey,
Still liking the K-12s? Are you using them with a Revelation? I noticed there is a B channel input ..I'm wondering if that could be used as a pa monitor feed?
