This is only remotely steel guitar related, sorry, but how do you transfer files (in my case, photos) from an Android cell phone to a PC? I have the right USB cable, and when I connect the phone to the computer, it recognizes the phone as a removal storage device and assigns a drive letter. However when I attempt to access the drive, I get a message saying there is no disk in the drive. Is there some kind of software needed?
Grr. Machines we love to hate is right. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I have a Verizon Samsung Fascinate Android phone. I haven't been able to access anything on it either. But I can e-mail pictures to myself and get them that way. |

I use an app called Dropbox on my iphone. You load the app on your phone and also on your computer and they will sync. I use the free version which offers 2 gigs of storage space. Very simple to use. Computer versions are available for Win, Mac and Linux. |

Ironically, an iPhone interfaces seamlessly with a PC. When I connect my daughter's iPhone, the autorun dialogue box comes up and asks what you want to do. Select "view files", and boom... there are all the folders with pictures, music, etc.
I have a Blackberry. It did the same thing as the Android. I installed Blackberry Desktop, which does some strange things when you launch it, but after the screen stops flashing you have a control panel that will allow you to import or export photos, among other things.
But the only software I've found online for the Android is app development software. I don't really want to develop apps, just move pictures from the phone to the computer. After emailing 30 something photos a few days ago, I decided there had to be a better way. _________________ Johnny Thomasson

I have a Verizon Droid X.
I just email myself the photos.
No need for extra apps and I don't have to be at my computer to do so. _________________ Private one on one lessons available

Let me qualify my reply by stating that I don't have a smartphone, just a Samsung slider phone. I use a micro SD memory chip in it to store photos, either taken with the camera, or imported from a PC.
When I plug in the phone's USB cable, the device that appears is the memory wafer. I can drag and drop images either way from the PC.
So, if your Android phones accept plug-in memory chips, add one and transfer all photos to that chip. Set your phone's multimedia options to save to the removable chip, rather than internal memory. Voila, you have a USB interface that can be accessed from a computer! _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Well, the smartphone is smarter than me. I can't figure out if it accepts SD memory chips or not. _________________ Johnny Thomasson |

Are you a Google user? If so, Android syncs with your Google account. You should be able to load Picasa on your PC and Android phone (free from Android Market) and seamlessly share from there.
Caveat...I'm not running Picasa for Android, but, everything else (email, docs, music, news, bookmarks etc...) syncs up great. No reason Picasa shouldn't.
Android is tightly integrated with just about everything Google!!

Excellent. If you haven't already, go to your setup menu and then "Accounts" and provide your Google login and password. It's all downhill from there.

It should be - it's a "Google phone". Android, Inc is a wholly owned subsidiary of Google, Inc. |

I can't give you a precise answer, since you don't say which Android phone you have, and there are a lot of them. But I doubt that you need other software, nor should you have to resort to things like removing the memory card, uploading to the internet, or emailing stuff to yourself.
The procedure should be explained in the phone's users manual. To do that with my Droid, just making the USB connection isn't enough. When I plug the cable into the phone, I get a prompt to "Turn on USB storage" which is a button on the Droid's screen. If I don't do that and try to browse the "Removable Drive" I see on my PC, I get the "Insert a disk in the removable drive" error message. But if I touch the button on the phone's screen to "Turn on USB Storage", I can then browse the phones contents on my PC, as well as transfer files back and forth.
Your phone may be set up to operate similarly. |

Hey, thanks Dave! I don't get the prompt you mention, but I'll give that a try. I would guess the "turn on USB storage" button would be under settings. I'm sure I have the manual around here somewhere, but I could probably download a copy if I can't find it.
I really appreciate the tip! Thanks again. _________________ Johnny Thomasson |

Rather than plug my droid into my computer, I remove my SD card and use this ten dollar doohickey from Radio Shack that a microSD card slides into, and it slides into the USB port (duh. MicroSD to USB adapter was the term I was after)
I hate the way nothing ever syncs as easy as drag and drop. |

I have one of those doohickies... it reads all shapes and sizes of cards. I'll try it.

The one I have only does microSD: it's about the size of the tip segment of your ring finger, but yeah, plugging card straight to computer has always worked for me. |
