I'm not much of a Mac head, although I've basically done all my home recording in the last couple of years on a G5 with Logic 9 until it was recently lost in a fire.

I've replaced the G5 with a 4 or 5 year old used Mac Pro (being a trailing edge technology kind of guy). I got a great deal on the Mac Pro, but it came with Lion Server installed. This OS isn't compatible with Logic 9 (I tried it), so I've ordered Snow Leopard OS to install.

My question is how to go about wiping the Lion Server install to do a fresh install of Snow Leopard. This machine came with 4 HDs, configured with Apple RAID util as a 'striped' array (I think...). Do I just use the HD Utility to erase all four drives and then boot to the Snow Leopard install disk and install from there? What about the RAID setup? Does the new Snow Leopard install just 'know' what to do with multiple HDs? I would assume it might detect the HDs and give me some sort of option on how to configure them, i.e. just 4 'normal' drives, some sort of RAID?

I've read conflicting things about RAID setups for audio, anybody got any experience or thoughts on that?

I'd like to have some sort of plan before I just start erasing drives, so thanks for any advice from any of you Mac gurus out there.

Bill, when you boot from the SL DVD you'll see a "Utilities" button on the first installer screen, which you would click to erase the hard drive before proceeding with the SL installation. After you get it up and running OK you can format the other hard drives at your leisure with Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

There have been some questions about whether SL will install on a blank hard drive (without an existing Leopard installation), but it seems that it will work.

Thanks Cal.. I had seen the question about installing SL on an erased drive, but I'd convinced myself that it should work. My main concern was what to do about the other HDDs, and I think your info makes sense. I'll install SL to one drive, then figure out what to do with the rest after that's working.
