I currently own an Excel U12 keyless and an Anapeg U12. The Anapeg is without peer. The only down side is weight and a looming fear that a band mate or drunk patron will ding it, so for the most part, it stays home. The Excel is my gigging rig. It's great because it's light and has very good build quality. The down side it that I think, due to it's size, tone quality suffers. I have tried several pickup and amp combinations, and nothing seems to even approach the Anapeg. I think the Anapeg benchmark is a little unrealistic, but the Excel is not cutting it.

Can any of you suggest a steel that is of reasonable weight, possibly keyless with great feel and tone?

Your comments would be greatly appreciated.

There is a difference in sound and feel between keyed and keyless mostly noticed by the player. I have a GFI and Sierra keyless that I am fond of and I use the GFI for weight purposes but it sounds nice. It does not have the classic sound as my Jackson, Mullen, Carter or Zum but has a sound I like. Joe Wright doesn't seem to have a problem with a keyeless Sierra 25" scale and gets a nice vibe from that guitar.

My 2 cents....
