Help! My computer won't come out of sleep mode!

Post by Jeff Strouse »

This starting happening a few months ago, so I disabled the sleep mode setting. From the best I can recall, if I unplugged the CPU for awhile, it would wake up when plugged back in.

However, this morning, I thought I'd see if it the sleep function works again, and I manually chose sleep mode for the day. When I went back at the end of day, and pushed the blinking power button, nothing happened. I unplugged the computer for about 20 minutes, plugged it back in, and it still wouldn't come on. The power button is blinking, but doesn't work when pushed.

I'm away for the evening and will leave it unplugged all night. Hopefully when I plug it back in tomorrow morning, it will boot up. If not, I don't know what to do....(other than throw the PC in the lake and get an iMac!)

Any idea how to get my PC back on? I'll never choose sleep mode again if I can just get it to come on again!

Thanks!

I had the same problem on a old PC, I never shut it down again after it happened once..

My newer PC has the standby mode which I use all the time...

It finally came back up!

I had given up, and was unplugging all the cords to take it to a repair shop. It suddenly turned itself back on when I started to jiggle one of the USB cords. I don't know if that had any thing to do with it or not, but luckily it came back on.

I'm backing up everything now....

Just in case anyone is interested in tech support prices, I called Best Buy Geek Squad and the fee was $70 for a diagnostic. CompUsa's fee was $129.99, both with a 1-3 day turnaround time. Then I found a local place that gave an instant free diagnostic while you wait, right in front of you.

I'm glad I called around...hopefully I won't need computer services in the future, but at least I know there are better, more convenient places to go than the big chains.

Probably best to disable the sleep mode function.
