Sneek Peek .. Sapele and Maple Deco Style

Post by Tom Pettingill »

Here is a fun one about ready for finish. This in still the raw, but the grain should pop nicely once the Tru Oil starts going on.

Thanks all, it is much appreciated! I'm very happy how this one is turning out.

Thanks ... all the inlay is gold mother of pearl. I wanted to add some tasteful accents but not go too overboard.

Very elegant Tom, you have that Art Deco touch! The headstock has a really nice look to it.

Nice

Very cool, art really! Most of my lap steels are about as artistic as a baseball bat, and equally dangerous when swung; not these, nice job.

Still a little way to go on the finish, but she is starting to shape up real nice.
Its hard to show in pics, but the figuring in that sapele is very 3D and moves and dances as the angle changes.

Sweet!! That Sapele really shows off nicely. I like the accent lines near the controls and on the headstock. Fret markers look great too! Not overboard at all.

What kind of pups are you putting in?......especially in the bridge?

Thanks guys! :)

Steve ... its getting a set of A3 BG's like on the JYD. I also made one of those deco covers for the neck pickup too.

Bill ... I wish ;) .. I'm 20+ coats in and still have a ways to go before its mirror flat.

Thanks Bill, I manage to get lucky sometimes :)

Last coats of finish went on yesterday and now it needs to cure out a week or so till the final polish / rub out.

Here are a couple quick pics of the control cover, knobs, and pickup rings I made for her. I also made one of my cool Deco style covers for the neck pickup. They are a royal pain in the ass to do, but I love the way they look.

Thanks again all .. I'm really looking forward to getting her detailed out and strung up.
She is also getting one of those cool Dusenberg multibenders and a custom Hatton case to keep her safe and sound.
