Tell me about Frank Carter's Infinity PSG!

Post by William Johnson »

Hello All,

So far, all I know is that Frank's recording playing his Infinity (from his web site) is awesome! It appears to be an extremely clean laid-out & efficient instrument with sparkling clear tone and note separation to the nth! I think Frank was one of the early E9 S12 Extended players.

Who is playing an Infinity? How would you describe or compare it to other steels? What is it's typical weight?

Thanks,
William Johnson (Billy)

Billy, I wish I could give you my personal experience
on Franks guitar, but I have not played it.
However, Knowing firsthand Franks expertise both in
design, machining,Lots of experience with no compromise,
not to mention his superb playing I would recommend this guitar without any qualms. If I had the $$$ I'd be in line for one myself.
Best wishes,

I've played two or three Infinity guitars when Frank brought them to the Arizona and Texas steel shows. They are very smooth playing and the fit and finish is totally top-notch. I was, and am, very impressed.

Truly, all the guitars being made today are excellent instruments. This is a golden era of steel guitar manufacturing.
My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg?

I am ready to place my order as soon as Frank gets back to production.

Can't wait. I have only owned one 'built for me" pedal steel, a ZB built in 1975. And it's gonna be a lacer one too!

The first piece of Frank's work I ever saw was the MCI he built for JayDee. It had a completely new undercarriage and sounded great (of course it did, JayDee was playing it).

Here it is:

But the Infinity goes quite a bit further with Frank's own design changer as well as other refinements. He's also gone to a p/p like 24.25" scale length, ten slot bellcranks, etc. The one I saw in Phoenix last January played almost too easy and sounded very p/p-like (Frank's admitted goal). There are adjustable pedal return springs if it's too light for your taste. Frank says a lot of that comes from the reduced friction with the roller between the fingers on his changer. And his craftsmanship is flawless. Check the website:

If Frank's going to be at a show near you anytime check the Infinity out.

Having visted Frank several years ago at his summer home, and seeing the neatness of one of his repair jobs in progress-including a total teardown and rebuild including new formica,as well as having seen and tried out his guitar at the Dallas show, I feel confident that there is not a builder any where more talented.

To top that off,He is amoung the most honest people
that I know. If he tells you something,"TAKE IT TO THE BANK..IT IS GOOD." I am honored to call he and his wife friends.

Frank just told me that he is almost a year out from shipping. I wonder if I could place an other now . . . I guess I need to ask him about such.

Herb, you are absolutely correct, we are in the Golden Age of PSG manufacturing. Affordable CNC machining centers have made this possible. A major spin-off of CNC technology, other than close machining tolerances in terms of precision and accuracy, is additional available man-hours that can be put back into the design and proto-typing stages, since correct desired part dimensions is usually a push of a button! New PSG designs can evolve efficiency as proto-typed iterations can be produced almost at will.

Take care,
