Charlie Pride Steel Player on Wilburns.......

Post by Bill Fisher »

Did anyone watch the Wilburn's today? Charlie Pride was on with his own band. Just wondering who his steel player was at the time. D10 Emmons. Hal Rugg was with the Wilburn's, but Charlie had his own steeler.

Please advise, and thanks.

Maybe Billy Poe? He worked with Charley in the '70s, I think.

:D Gene Oneal was the one with Charlie around 1969 through the 70's.

Thanks, Audie: I'm sure you are correct. I googled around, and read about him. It said he kept a rag on his lap, and wiped his bar after every song; which is exactly what this guy was doing on the Wilburn's with Charley. So, there's no doubt in my mind.

Thanks, again, for your reply.

Thanks for asking that question. I was going to ask it myself. Mr. Oneal played great on that show and sounded superb on that P/P.

Yes, Kevin: That Emmons sounded much, much better than Hal Rugg's Sho-Bud. No comparison, really.

:D Gene always used a red pinstripe bar towel because it didn't have any lint on that kind of towel. Another interesting point was that Gene did not have his floor pedal raise his 4th and 5th string which is typically on the 3rd pedal, he always told me that it made more sense to have that on as a knee lever. The first album that he played on with Charlie Pride was Kiss an Angel Good Morning. That's when Charlie started using Gene on his sessions, prior to that it was Lloyd Green. Gene was a good friend.

And also a super nice guy. Met Gene in Nashville in 89. You would think we were old friends the way he treated us. Will never forget him
