OK, I'm gonna step into some tall cotton here with all you legit steel players, but I just recorded this old song with the singer from my band (Doozy) and threw on a C6 dobro at the end. (It's a Beard Gold Tone Deluxe, stock, no Beard setup or anything.) What the hell, caution to the wind, I reckon I've heard worse. It's a fun song no matter what:

Cool, Mike, does that group do the verse as well as the chorus? We actually play the verses to most of the covers we do, and we've written verses for most of our originals as well. Really adds a whole other dimension to a song, and for steel players a great opportunity to play sort of rubato over the changes. I chose not to do the verse on this one, though, just because we DO so many of them.
Those chords pretty much look like I've got 'em, just in a different key. On the full measures I often alternate between the I and a V+ chord, just to add some movement and interest--kind of ragtimey thing--and on the IV chord change instead of going next to IVm I do a bVdim change. |

I play guitar with this group--sort of a George Van Eps/Django hybrid style. I'm always looking for ways to enhance the tune, so when I look at the chart, I'm already strategizing (plus, I'm often deciphering the uke player's strange chord choices). Yes, we do the verses, but the uke player/singer usually plays them alone. She has a very velvety, gorgeous voice.

| Very nice, Mike. She's got a sweet and sincere, unaffected approach and delivery. So many singers doing music like this (and a lot of music, really) are so full of affectation. Looks like a fun gig. Will have to look into the Brooklyn Rod and Gun Club for Doozy when we come to NYC. |
