Gonna sound dumb but...tone bar cases?

Post by Brian Hunter »

I have a couple of tone bars that did not come with cases. I don't need them but would like them. Any ideas on what could stand in for a case?

I can't find M&M Minis around here, so I went with Mentos gum tubes. :)

If you have a Harley Davidson shop in your area, stop in the service department and ask em for the little plastic case that their carborator tune-up kits come in. The have divided compartments that are perfect matches for steel bars, picks and tuning wrenches. I put lil pieces of velco on the bottom and it makes the case adhere to the carpet inside my SteelSeat.com

Three M&M Mini tubes were just purchased. But I may have to hit the HD dealership soon as well!

Tone bars, picks caddy, fits on your belt, and is secure, check out the acoustic steels too. In the UK but a lightweight item so far as postage in concerned?

Look at uke shops for teeny guitar cases that fit in your hand, per the smallest I've seen the neck part will accomodate a bar and the body section your picks.

Well, I've made other things out of PVC connectors, so they came-to-mind, when I wanted something to protect my bars. I call them "PVC Bar Protectors". I went to Home Depot & they have boxes of different size PVC connectors. I have 2 primary bars--10 & 12 string, pictured. I measured them & took them with me to Home Depot, to make sure they fit. The long PVC section, threaded at one end, measures 1 13/16" L. X 15/16" I.D.(inner diameter). On it, though, is stamped 1" X 3/4". I then got the non-threaded cap for the non-threaded end & the inner-threaded cap for the threaded end. You can try all of the PVC pieces for best fit, so you don't have to do some sanding at home. I think I had to sand & file the non-threaded long section to get the end-cap on right & then used regular super-glue to attach it. That end-cap extends the length some, so even my 12 string bar fits. For the smaller diameter/length bars the smaller PVC connectors may fit, you'll have to check. The ones I made fit very neatly into my pack-a-seat.

I use an old zippered, pipe tobacco pouch for picks and bar. It goes in my pocket, along with my tuner, when the guitar comes out of the case and I'm good to go. www.beardguitars.com has them as would most any tobacco shop.

Plastic prescription pill containers come in a few different sizes, work great for bars and picks.

Socks! Tie it up, prevents scratches and dings on all but the worst accidents and you probably already have some.

Dang, I'm cheap! :\
