Does anyone have any info on Phil Spurbeck ?

Post by Earl Knapp Jr »

Phil and I were good friends when he was in KC playing for Jimmy Dallas. I played with the late, great Clayton Howerton just down the road at Buffy's Lounge in the Stadium Inn and we got done at 1 am and Phil and Jimmy stayed open til 3 am and I would go hear his last set and the we would usually go somewhere and hang out that was still open or for breakfast. I had heard he was killed in a auto crash in Louisiana and just found out recently that he was still alive and playing down south . I sure would like to talk to him again and maybe go down to see him sometime soon. He was a blast to be around and a true friend and a monster steel player. Would love some info on him. Thanks all.

Phil lives around the Alexandria LA area. I am not sure what his phone # is but maybe I can find out for you. He was with Charlie Morre and I at the Dallas show this year.

I met Phil in the early 70's when he was playing a club here in Baton Rouge and loved his playing. Ran into him about 10 years ago in Alexandria where we were both playing but sadly didn't get to hear him play.
Jack, You don't have to go all across Texas to hear Jimmy play, just cross the river at Natchez, go a ways and hang a right. :D :\

Yes, but not for long. Phil's daddy found out
Phil quit school to tour with Bob, and went
and got him and put him back in school!

I met Phil about a month ago. He came to the lake to visit his kids. We had a little jam session with him. He told us he hadn't played for quite a few years because of health issues. He had just recently pulled the old MSA out from under the bed. He is doing well...wish I would have known you were friends Earl. I would have got you over here.
