Quick Question about Strings

Post by Alan Siegler »

Is there really a different between Pedal Steel Strings and Non-Pedal Strings. I hope I can get some really good answers. Especially C6th Tuning.

Thanks

To my knowledge they are the same (at least in the GHS line I use) but GHS does make a .011PG string which is pretested to insure tensile strength ( helpful on the #3 string on the E9 neck)

The individual strings I use for my guitars are in the same individual packs as the ones I use on my lap and pedal steels. I will say it is hard to find the heavier string gauges in a "guitar" set. Mine are usually 11 to 46 for the guitar and some of my lap steels get up to .056.

I cannot speak to other string mfgs. YMMV!

I read somewhere I believe in the Steel Guitar Forum that if you play a lap steel guitar then you need to get No-Pedal Steel Strings for which every tuning you like. So I bought Scott's Non-Pedal Strings and I'm currently in the process of evaluating them.

Anybody else got any thoughts on this?

Thanks

Some of the older SGF Members are still using JERRY BYRD's special string set-up for lap steel that consisted of Gibson Spanish Guitar strings. You can find out more about it by visiting the JERRYBYRD-FANCLUB.com/

Electric guitar strings are the same whether played on a pedal steel, non-pedal steel, or regular guitar. You do need to use the right set of string gauges for C6th tuning, as a standard set of electric guitar strings will not be the correct sizes. See the link to Strings at the top of this page for some suggested string gauges.
