Tone bar help for newbie!!!

Post by Dave Fowler »

Hi everyone,
Just joined this fantastic site. I was referred by Brad. What a great resource. I have a question and wondered if anyone had suggestions before I may learn some bad habits in my period of taking baby steps on lap style. I have Tele that I converted to slide some time ago. I have been using thumb and finger picks so that is not the issue. My problem is when I play the Tele lap style w/ a bar. I have hardly any control over my vibrato like I did w/ the bottle neck. I think its because I always coul rest my left hand thumb behind the neck. What can I do w/ the bar that might help like that did for bottleneck standing up? I have an Asher lap steel on order so I am anxious to get on the right foot. thanks!

Maybe watch some Junior Brown vids to see how he does it, or try a Stevens type bar for a better grip, unless you plan to slant.
