I have 2 of them and love them! Just listen to Tommy Detamore sometime to hear how good they sound.

I like the sound, especially with George L humbuckers.
I like the smooth and accurate feel of the pedals and levers.
They seem very stable in terms of staying mechanically aligned and (reasonably) in tune.
I haven't hauled mine about, so I can't comment on how well they hold up on the road.
I have Al Briscos' DVD on care and set up, but he's close by, so I benefit from his expertise in getting my steels set up pefectly.
If I play the notes properly, the Carter sounds like a pro ... I can't ask for more than that.

It is easy to play the steel guitar. Playing so that the audience finds it pleasing is the difficult act.

I had my Carter D12 built for me in
December 2005 and I love it. I had been using MSA D12's from 1968 to 2005 and wanted a Carter due to being lighter and close style of the MSA's I had been playing. The tone, action is superb. I rarely, close to never, have to make adjustments on the pedal pulls. It is usually in tune ready to play after setup. Bud builds and designs great pedal steels and Bud still plays his universal Carter. Carter is or was not a cheapie type pedal steel, unless you ordered a starter.

Not trying to hyjack your thread but what strings are you using on the E-9th neck?

Jack
If you are referring to my blurb, my E9 neck is just an extended E9. Strings 11 and 12 are G# and E. Gives me more depth on I and IV chords.

I've become very attached to my 2005 S12U:

If you can't be a good example, be a horrible warning.

I have had 3 Carter D10 Steels, my current and only Steel is a Carter 04 9+8..At one point a few years back I had 4 D10 Steels in the room, MSA, Sho-Bud, Emmons Legrande and a Carter. One remains.

Very consistent Instrument with excellent mechanical performance . There may be perhaps better Steels manufactured and with different tonality, but they are not more reliable and consistent in performance.

John and Bud gave us a well designed and crafted instrument.

Weight

Post by Mark Dershaw »

I'm going to purchase a D10 in the near future and Carter is one of my potentials. About how much does a D10 Weigh (in the case)?

My D10 weighs about 65#. My old ShoBud Pro III weighs 85#, btw. That 25# is significant when schlepping it.

Thanks to this thread I was afforded an opportunity to purchase a beautiful black D10 Carter from a generous gentleman in Tennesee. What a great guitar! It looks great, plays even better, and the tone is beautiful. I'm happy to have joined the club!

I need to weigh it to give the official count, but I'm pretty sure the case on my Carter weighs more than ten pounds.

Here's my 3 year old Carter. I love it and feel very lucky that this was /is my first Steel guitar. I might buy another steel in the future but I'll always keep this one.
