E bay scam? What do you think?

Post by Ron Pruter »

To me, the picture is a nice Carter and then the actual guitar you are buying (pictures kind of in the dark) is not that guitar. Do You Agree?

Looks like the same guitar to me. One of the photos of the underside even shows the Magnum Pro sticker. I guess I'm not seein what you see Ron.

It does appear that the standing Steel is a Carter and the other photo's are a Mgnum, maybe he has two steels and made a mistake in the photo..the add states Magnum and that would be the "other" pictures..

I would send him a note if interested.

Maybe the chrome polish and the Carter name threw me. I thought the Magnums were powder coated.

I have a Magnum Pro Select. The Magnum does not have the Carter Logo on the left front, but has 2 Magnum logos, - one on the left and one on the right of the front panel.

There is an inconsistency -

The photo of the pedal steel shows a Carter PSG, and not a Magnum Pro Select.
The serial number on the inside of another photo shows the inside of a Magnum Pro Select

Although the Magnum was made by Carter, it was introduced in 2005, used some different construction materials than the Carter, and was sold via Carter dealer network. It cost less than the Carter.

The seller having only "one feedback" (for a $5 item) would scare me away. The legs in the pouch do not look like the legs on the assembled guitar.

it appears to be more of a "wrong picture" rather than a scam. Nonetheless, it's in Canada, last time I bought something big from Canada was the last, I got beat up huge by shipping and border crossing costs.

I see Al Brisco's name mentioned , perhaps contact Al directly and ask him what he knows about the seller and the Steel.

That seems to be a very popular picture. Getting reposted more often than a politician's crotch shot. Maybe he's using "borrowed" photos because the guitar is still in the unopened box?

definitely some red flags here, but on Ebay you can ask the seller a question (as direct or diplomatic as you choose) and see what kind of response you get

I've been able to sort out a few miscommunications this way on route to successful transactions, and have confirmed my supicions about a few dubious offers that I stayed away from

being a little suspicious and erring on the side of caution is probably always the best course...

I asked the seller about it. This was his reply:
I hadn't assembled it to take a picture, and I tried to find a similar one online. I have now updated the gallery with my fully assembled model. Sorry for any inconvenience.

I guessed right. Wish I had the money. They aren't making these anymore, and that's a shame.

Another sale being steered away from the forum.
A lot of good deals on the steel guitar forum.
