I know that various players (like Phil Baugh) have used pedals with standard guitars, used B-benders, string bending etc to marry standard guitar tones with steel guitar sounds. I was wondering ... has anyone tried tuning a telecaster to the C6th tuning? I don't think I've ever heard this. |

One night back in September 1973 I was driving thru Nashville on my way to L.A. and decided to stop and check out who was playing down on Broadway. So I walked into a club and swore I heard Chaulker playing C6 but then realized there was no steel. I was hearing a guy play a Gibson 335 with fingerpicks and a volume pedal thru a Twin Reverb and that's it - no manual string bending,no string pulling gadgets,no fake E9 licks. He was doing it all with voicings, voice leading, picking and volume pedal technique. I had to leave before the set was over and get back on the road so I didn't catch his name. That's haunted me ever since. |

Hey Michael, that sounds like it might have been Danny Holder. He spent some time in L.A. before '73 and played a 335 with a thumbpick and 4 fingerpicks with a volume pedal through a Twin. I think it was a sunburst 335 if I remember right. Herb Steiner in Austin knows Danny..... I'm sending you a PM about another fact about him......JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

The guy I saw in Nashville was somewhere between 35 and 45 at that time I'd say - and it was at either Tootsie's or the Demen's Den I believe. |

So would a person really want to hear Willie Nelson trying to sing like Ray Price if you know what I mean. |

Nope but if I could sound like Curly, I would! No chance of that in this lifetime. Probably my favorite faux steel Tele playing is by Joe Dalton. His only effect is a little bit of compression.

Still wonder about the C6th on a Tele. Maybe I'll try it some time. |

My buddy Rob plays some of the C6 stuff in this tune about 1:40 into the song. Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant, pretty cool.

Why not just play relative chords and scales to the C6 family with the standard guitar tuning ? I guess I don't see any benefit to tuning a guitar to C6th . It seems it would be limiting...the guitar tuning is somewhat like a piano, it is not defined to any one specific style, genre or musical mode whereas a Steel guitar is pretty much defined by a BAR across the strings and that's why we had triple necks !
But , I'm sure somewhere someone has done this... _________________ Emmons L-II , Fender Telecasters, B-Benders , Eastman Mandolin ,

For many years I worked with a guitar player named Joe Dalton. He can play more C6 licks on a six string tele that I can on my Emmons D10. Look up Joe Dalton Guitar on youtube and check out some of his videos. Quite a few SGF members are familiar with Joe and I'm sure they can attest to his ability to do difficult bends and stretches on guitar.
He uses standard guitar tuning. |

Sorry Andy I guess I missed your post. Joe is teaching school and doing the video lessons and I'm hoping to get him out pickin' with us again soon. |

Wow. Hot stuff. To get the actual C6th steel inversions on standard guitar takes some real far stretches and you can't get all the voices. |

I just found this...same song, same guy....this one he entered into the guitar world best unknown guitarist competition a few years ago and came in third.

It's a hoot to watch him play this stuff- he makes it look so easy. He's showed me stuff over the years, it's not easy, no matter how he makes it look

Holy cats! I was just listening to it and could've sworn there was a hot jazzer then a hot steeler playing! _________________ Primitive Utility Steel |

Man, that Clint Marrs guy is nuts - clearly he's been hiding in a basement for thirty years practicing, huh? There are these hidden geniuses all over the place nowadays. |
