I have a U-12 ZumSteel and have a TrueTone, wound to 19,500 on it. I get accolades all the time as to how the steel sounds. Mind you, the steel, not me. It came with a Lawrence 912, but, was too muddy for me. Not enough clarity and believe me, I really twisted the amp knobs to no avail, for my acceptance. Luckily, I haven't experienced any hum from the pickup, so, all is good. You might want to give Jerry Wallace a call and see what he recommends.

I use an Emmons single coil in a Emmons and an Alumitone in the Carter.

HI GUYS... I AM FINDING OUT THAT FOR ME.. MY UNI WITH 12-1 IN IT..SOUNDS A LOT BETTER THRU MY ALL TUBE 40 WATT FENDER THAN MY 2 N.VILLES.
IT'S THE FIRST STEEL I'VE HAD WITH A HUMBUCKER IN IT.
ARE THE HOTTER SINGLE COILS TOO NOISY? LIKE AROUND
18K TO 19K RANGE?
THANKS!!

I use TrueTones in my newer guitars and the original Emmons single coil in my push-pull. I do quite a bit of recording and lots of gigs in places with less that optimal power and have had no more problems than I had with the various BL and GeorgeL pickups I've used. And the sc's sound much better to my ear.

I like the TrueTone wound to about 19.5K

That's what works for me.

Two pickups that are worth considering are the Tone Aligner and the Alumitone. The Tone Aligner is a humbucker but has more "snap" than most, and the alumitone has a single coil sound without the 60 cycle hum.

I had a George L pickup in my BMI Uni for about 4 months and then took it out and sold it as the original BMI pickup (single coil) sounded better.........JH in Va.

I use the original single coil in my Kline. Sounds great! There's something about the highend with humbuckers that I just don't like.

me neither too Very Happy

The BL712 was always too crispy for me and the 912 removed some of the harsh high end but still not near the punch and separation of a good single coil. Around 15-16K they will sound like an old, old Emmons or even a bit like a Fender. If you favor the E9 side of the U12 tuning you might like 17-18K. I play a lot of low notes and like the 'balls' you get at 19 or 19.5K. That's the sweet spot for me. YMMV.

The alumitones sound like single coils, but don't hum.

I use Bob Hoffner'a Tone Aligners primarily because I like being able to adjust the volume, and to a lessor extent tone, of each individual string.

I think the Tone Aligners are the best humbucking pickups around. But I also think the Alumitones do sound a tad better. On a scale of 1 to 10, the alumitones would be 10, but the Tone Alingners are a 9 and half.
