Jerry Garcia finger picks

Post by Mike Winter »

Haven't been on the Forum for a while. Just wonderin' if Jerry Garcia used a finger pick on thumb and index finger only or also on the third finger, since his "bird" finger had been cut off on a camping trip years before by his brother Kip.

I understand that any Jerry references here usually brings out all the nay sayers. :( So, there's really no point in saying his blocking sucked, etc. I'm only interested in the question.

Another question is that Jerry gutted the C6 at some point on his old ZB. So, was that before Lloyd invented the LDG? Just wonderin'.

I can't answer the fingerpick question, but I can tell you that his brother's name is Tiff, not Kip.

WIKI:
During Garcia's "pedal steel flirtation period" (as Bob Weir referred to it in Anthem to Beauty),
from approximately 1968 to 1973, he played a ZB Custom D-10 steel guitar, especially in his earlier public performances.
Although this was a double neck guitar, Garcia often would choose not to attach the last 5 pedal rods for the rear or Western Swing neck.
Additionally, he was playing an Emmons D-10 at the time of the Grateful Dead's and New Riders of the Purple Sage's final appearances at the Filmore East in late April 1971.
Also, he had been given a Fender Pedal Steel (probably a 1000 model) prior to owning the ZB Custom, but did not play it much.[citation needed]

I think Jerry played banjo and pedal steel the same way with a thumb pick ,pick on index and third because of his half middle finger . I think you can tell if you see any pics or video of him playing Banjo

Maybe dobro/pedal steel player Pete Grant would know and might chime in as he knew Jerry and played with him.

Hope that helps

Oddly enough, I just ran into this on Youtube... Maybe 20 seconds in, there is a shot of Jerry on the steel clearly showing his picking hands... 1 and 3 have picks on it..
