I run a Carter SD10 with a GL's E66 pup straight into a Session 500; Shobud volume through loop (1 meg pot). I can't seem to get over 4 without the limit light on the amp coming on. Eq is Low +9 Mids -9 High -3 Pres +3 Pre 3. I understand that the eq can suck the head room but I don't have enough clean room to get over the guitar player who uses a PV Special 130 with the volume on 1! Is it time for the shop or is there something I can do?

As I recall, my old session 500 started doing that, and I stopped playing it. This was about 12 years ago... My guess is that it needs some help- perhaps there is a cold solder join tor other intermittent.

From an electrical power supply perspective, running your amp volume at "4" with your bass at "+9" is pretty much the same as running the amp at "9" with the bass straight up. That'll use up your headroom in a hurry!

A Session 500 is normally able to make itself heard above anything short of a jet engine.I think it's tech time.

The clipping light phenomenon is definitely a problem. On mine, when it was working properly, you could get it louder than a human can stand and it would never come on.

Then at some point it would come on a low volume, and the amp didn't sound right. I think it is a power supply issue. Maybe bad caps? Gotta get mine on the bench at some point.

Thanks for the input guys. I was hoping there would be some little trick or something I could adjust somewhere that would help. I guess it's off to see the wizard! Oh Well

Before I hauled off to the Wizard, I would try it without the volume pedal in the circuit. Why one meg?

Cheers!

My Session 500 went into clipping very easy. It turned out to be bad power supply caps. Considering the age of a Session 500, and if they have never been replaced that is a good possibility.

Without the pedal, it's better but less volume. When I return to the same volume, it's back to clipping.

My old pot went out the week I was scheduled to play at a steel guitar showcase and the repair shop had a 250k or a 1m with the longer shaft. I figured the 1m would be better. I just haven't bothered to change it back to a 500k yet. It sounds fine but the sweep is a little long on it for my pedal.

I'll check with the original owner on the caps. Thanks for the suggestion!
