I have been spending a lot of time with my resonator lately. And I have always been a fan of bullet bars. But lately I'm finding that it is helpful to apply moe pressure on a resonator than one normally would on an electric guitar. So I have concluded that stevens style bars are good for something other thsan hammer/pull. It also explains the inordinately high string guages recommended by Mr. Auldridge.

That's been my experience too. In general I've found that high string tension can make a big difference in the overall volume, tone and responsiveness of resonator guitars. Its all part of a good set-up and getting the mechanics of the resonator assembly to operate at peak performance. So given the higher string tension not only is it necessary to apply more pressure with the bar, but you have to adjust your right hand, play harder to pull good tone out of the instrument. At least that's the way it works for me.

When I switch from resonator to Weissenborn guitar I find I have to adjust my approach/technique to get the best tone out of the guitar. They are two completely different animals!

Directly related to your topic... there is a real and physical difference with these NEWTONE STRINGS. They are handmade (I use them on my acoustic resonators) and have a round core! No one makes a round core but they do. This means there is less tension for fatter wound strings. The only quirky part is that you need to be careful when you string them up so the end does not unwind. Great for Dobro and Weissenborn and they last a very long time. YOU NEED LESS BAR PRESSURE as well. Wonderful handmade stings.

Hmmm, my Beard Goldtone seems to speak better with lighter gauge strings, go figger!

I really like round core strings on electric bass, but am less fond of 'em on guitar. Haven't tried 'em on reso or lap steel so it's definitely worth a shot!
