Recently ran across this great song by Jimmy LaFave:

Can anybody identify what instrument that steeler is playing? It's shaped like a squareneck dobro, but doesn't have a resonator; seems to have two humbucking pickups on top; the sound isn't pure lap steel, though, I hear quite a bit of "acoustic" tone in there, too... Never seen anything like that.

I don't recognize the make of the guitar but it looks like a square neck, solid body lap steel.

I don't recognize the make either but I would bet that the body is hollow. That thing has about the depth of some dobros and if it were a solid body then a Les Paul would be a lightweight by comparison! Whoa!

What Mark said. I'd bet it's a 'semi-acoustic'. Probably a fairly solidly braced top, no soundholes, etc but still made to get a more acoustic flavor. The pickups look like TV Jones models to me but it's tough to tell.
Sounds real good but it needs a pickguard. Wink

Yup, the PUs do look like Filtertrons. Your description sounds about right, must be some custom model, because I can't think of any stock square-neck semi-acosutic guitar like that...
