If I take a standard Low C6 tuning:

1. E
2. C
3. A
4. G
5. E
6. C
7. A
8. G

And lower the bass string (8th string) to an F:

1. E
2. C
3. A
4. G
5. E
6. C
7. A
8. F

Would this then be called a C11 tuning? Would the addition of the F note make it an 11th tuning?

An 11th chord is made by adding the 11th scale tone, in this case F, to a dominant 9 chord. Since you don't have a b7 (Bb) or a 9 (D) it's not a true 11 chord, but maybe you could call it a C6 add 11.

I've always thought that as long as you have a dom 7 added before the 11th, you could call it an 11 chord...and that goes for a 13th chord too. So in C:

C E G Bb F

So whats the correct way? Does it HAVE to have a 9th added? I've always wanted to know.

With the F on the bottom, you have a F Maj 7 with a 9.

Otherwise known as an FM9 Smile

I'd still think of it as an C6/F instead though.
