Who is your favorite steeler?

Post by Cody Angel »

I am a new player and need some good influences. I am a Lloyd Maines devotee and of course I love the work of PF and Buddy Emmons. Who else should I be listening to and who is the hottest in your minds? thanks guys!!

Most of my life I've thought the playing & especially the tone of HAL RUGG was what the PSG was all about . BOBBE SEYMOUR has a great selection to listen & learn from , JIM COHEN , also MIKE HEADRICK and my favorite BUCK REID .
Plenty of others with great music to pick from , but these are some of my favorites .

At other times it comes down to all the usual suspects :)

Living: Tommy White, Lloyd Green, Weldon Myrick, Buddy Emmons, Robby Turner, Doug Jernigan, Dicky Overby, Reece Anderson, Terry Bethal, Joan Cox, Randy Rienhardt, Sonny Garrish (during the Bill Anderson years)

Deceased: Hal Rugg, Tommy Morrell, Curly Chalker, Pete Drake, Billy Braddy, Buddy Charlton, Speddy West, Jimmy Day, Big Jim Murphy. John Hughy (During the Conway years),
Not necessarily in that order. And you may notice that these are all old school players.

Top ten: Myrick, Rugg, Green, Emmons, Chalker, T. White,Drake, Morrell, Anderson, Charlton.

If I had to pick only one, Tommy White!!!!!!

Note: I also have great admiration for Paul Franklin, Mike Johnson and Steve Hinson who are my generation of players.

Hey Cody,
You've been given the Masters of Pedal Steel for sure but don't let a Mr. Johnny "Dumplin" Cox get under your radar screen! :) Johnny has played with some of the greatest country stars ever to grace a stage and to this day, he's playing for one of the greatest, Mr. Gene Watson. :whoa: Carl

Dave Easley, Doug Livingston (posts here as Earnest Bovine) & Mike Perlowin. They're first and foremost musicians, who get a steel guitar to do what they want it to, as opposed to "steel players" who let it push them around. You'll hear a zillion people playing the "Buddy" liicks and the "Poco licks"; you'll never hear anybody able to copy this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nw2b73Yk7Hk

(skip it ahead to 2:35 if you're in that big a hurry)

You can listen to that back to back with the Coltrane and Stan Getz takes on the same tune, and not feel as though the steel is impairing the performance. Yike!

I'm going to go way out on a limb here and suggest Susan Alcorn. You'll either love her work or hate it, but you'll have to agree, she is definitely different.

Some other names that must appear in this thread are Al Vescovo, Joe Goldmark, and David Wright.
Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

If I had to pick just one: Lloyd Green

Outside of the usual suspects: Big Jim Murphy, Buzz Evans, Greg Leisz, Joaquin Murphy, Vance Terry...

The short list would be steelers I don't like! (I won't go there!)
