The Ted Turnier old movie channel was playing the old movie "From Here To Eternity". This took place in Hawaii and in many of the scenes in the local Bar Hangout there was impeccable Steel Guitar playing.
Great tone and technique. I wonder who was doing the playing ? Pssibly one of the Traveres Brothers ! |

According to Jody Carver, Freddy Tavares played steel guitar in "From Here To Eternity".

Lorene Ruymar's book cites Danny Stewart as the the steel player in "From Here To Eternity." Confusion about who played in what movie is common though so its hard to be sure. In some cases guitarists appeared as extras or were lost on the cutting room floor. Speaking of extras, in the background of one bar scene you can see two service men flirting with a dark haired girl. She commits the cardinal sin of movie extras when she directs her attention straight into the camera. I am convinced she is Lei Aloha who danced on the Harry Owens TV show about the same time.

| I've seen Andy Iona, Danny Stewart, Barney Isaacs, Freddie Tavares, Jules Ah See, and King Tut as credited for the film's steel music. But, I know it's Merle Travis portraying a guitar picking soldier in that flick. |

My favorite movie of all time. It really captures Oahu as it must have been in 1941--beautiful aloha shirts and teeming with soldiers and music. Sinatra deservedly won an Academy Award as Maggio. Great performances by Lancaster, Clift, and Ernie Borgnine. Ernie is still out there in his 90s and recently did a guest role on Saturday Night Live. The scenes with Travis and Clift goofing on "Re-enlistment Blues" are classic.
I've also noticed great Hawaiian music on several episodes of the original black and white "Perry Mason" TV series from the late 50s. There must have been a writer or producer who was a fan. I've never known who did the music, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was one of the Tavares brothers. |

| Another old movie, "Donovan's Reef" has Barney Issacs playing a lot of background in it. Mostly Waipio (I believe) and Pearly Shells. Nice old movie, with John Wayne, Lee Marvin, and a lovely young Hawaiian girl, etc, and great scenery... |
